Book description: Lauren Olamina and her family live in one of the only safe neighborhoods remaining on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Behind the walls of their defended enclave, Lauren’s father, a preacher, and a handful of other citizens try to salvage what remains of a culture that has been destroyed by drugs, war, and chronic shortages of water, gasoline, and more. When fire destroys their compound, Lauren’s family is killed and she is forced out into a world that is facing apocalypse. With a handful of other refugees, Lauren must make her way north to safety. .
At first this book appears to be about a different take on religion, but I urge everyone to go deeper, because it is a much deeper written work than that. It is about survival and meeting people where they are, while keeping hope alive in a hostile and unforgiving world, not much different than the United States is in 2026. I highly recommend this book. I plan to read the sequel, but also will revisit this book. I know it has much more to show me.
