  I’d be worried about breaking compatibility across the lemmyverse. The thing that makes the Lemmy a federated system is that they are all instances of the same thing. Also the main contributors are going to be the most knowledgeable on the subject which is why their opinions would be important.

  It is still an option though if the original project starts doing things that cross some line. The example given doesn’t seem even close to crossing that line. I don’t see how this person thinks this decision by them is unreasonable. Do they believe that their change should be the default behavior of the default UI of Lemmy and that this is the majority opinion on the matter? Seems unlikely to me.

    I’d be worried about breaking compatibility across the lemmyverse.

    You can play quite fast and loose with ActivityPub as long as you give Lemmy the data it expects.

    Ideally it’d ignore anything it’s not aware of, and if it didn’t then cross-federation with the likes of Mastodon and whatnot would already be breaking left right and center.

    This is lemmy-ui, not lemmy, so it wouldn’t break compatibility really. Not saying I think this warrants a fork.

  Are we really making a tantrum about a default setting? One that is (or rather would be) a sensible choice? Or am I missing the bigger picture?

  If the devs wanted to put some intrusive default settings (like a central image-upload checker) then I would understand, but this is a fucking boolean for whether to allow infinite scrolling on the bundled frontend.
  This is what server admins are for: to config their servers in a way they see fit for their communities.

  And about the content URLs. Later on they agreed on accepting it if someone implemented it well, even if they said they won’t work on it for now because there are more important things to get done (and let’s be honest, that’s true).

  Feel free to take the branch and reopen the pull request.

  Instead of contributing to a project where only dessalines, lionirdeadman and nutomic dictate what gets approved, why not make a fork with the settings most people agree on?

  I’m confused, they seem willing to accept the feature if someone else develops it.

  See Misskey and Mastodon. They have several forks with varying reasons and levels of success.

  It’s an option but not always easy. Just please make sure not to kill the federation by doingbopposing technical stuff.

  Is the problem the URL length? The numbers are meaningless to the user. A compromise might be to display the other information, but have it so domain/post/postID would also navigate correctly.

  Same reason we display the domain name instead of IP addresses, because a collection of numbers doesn’t help the user

    Eh, I’m wary of kbin in it’s current state mainly due to how little instances there are. That’s generally not a good sign for any federated software. (Maybe deployment is too complicated? Maybe it guzzles server resources like no tomorrow?)

    Both instances I’ve signed up to have already shut down, and from what I’ve heard the mod tooling is somehow even worse than Lemmy’s. It definitely needs more dev work before it’ll really fill that role.

  Work harder and better than the current devs, and everyone will be running your code in no time. Anything else is just whinging and shit-stirring.
