- Comment on Mahle CEO Arnd Franz says hydrogen will fail without fossil fuels 1 month ago:
Industrial processes use A LOT of hydrogen, and most of it is derived from hydrocarbons. The best use for “green hydrogen”, by far, is replacing grey industrial hydrogen.
Only then you can start replacing non-hydrogen use cases, like industrial heat and power generation and (eventually) transportation.
The fact that this is up for debate is a testament to the success of the misinformation we’ve been exposed to for thirty years or more.

- Comment on Is the RNC and DNC monopolies? 1 month ago:
It’s not really “established” becaue there isnt any formal body declaring what names different voting systems have.
That is the most pompous way to say “I have never heard of political science”.
Are you unclear about what recognition other demcracies give to parties, how there is no prize for 2nd place in America, or why that lack of such a prize gives rise to a two-party system?
This is the most pompous way to say “I am unaware that lots of countries on this planet have district based systems”.

it’s established terminology. I’m sure you have feelings about the term, but I’m not really invested in them either way.

I’m not sure what you are referring to

- Comment on Is the RNC and DNC monopolies? 1 month ago:
Many countries have first-past-the-post elections, and there usually we don’t see the mortal lock of three two major party like we see in the U.S. in the UK for example we have regional parties (SNP, DUP, etc) and lib Dems/greens that win seats and send people to Westminster.
The main problem as far as I can see is that campaigning in the US is very expensive, and third parties have problems raising the cash needed to make a dent in elections for Congress, let alone statewide office.
To frame it in economic terms, it’s a market with a high barrier to entry that has evolved a duopoly. In that aspect it’s not too dissimilar to cable companies etc.

Karate is Japanese, mr Sensei sir.
- Comment on Is martial arts really that useful? 1 month ago:
It’s a sport. It’s not meaningfully more useful than other sports.
If you want something that’s genuinely useful in a confrontation, give up the fantasy of beating people up. Every time you fight you run a very real risk of incurring permanent harm or worse. Instead, sign up for track and learn and practice how to run away really fast.
TLDR: fighting not good. Not fighting, good.
- Comment on Academic writing 1 month ago:
Academic security research is constitutionally bad because academia as an environment selects people with a “hacker mentality” out at the freshman stage.
It’s inherently biased towards rule-followers. That’s not a bad thing, but it means it’s bad at some things. Such as computer security research.

- Comment on The reason we don’t see exploding battery attacks more often is not because it’s technically hard, it’s because the erosion of public trust in everyday things isn’t worth it. 1 month ago:
Throw a device from s series into a fire as a spot check and if it burns it’s ok, if it explodes give the entire series to your enemy’s kids to play with.
Most high explosives burn unless detonated properly.
This is really basic stuff. I don’t think you should be out and about giving people advice about handling (potential) explosives.
- Comment on Ethernet switch only partially working 1 month ago:
That’s highly dependent on the hardware. My router only has two ports.
- Comment on Ethernet switch only partially working 1 month ago:
Just to make sure you know this, routers are not switches. You might get some of them to sort behave like switches with careful configuration, but most of the time it’s asking for a lot of trouble.
- Comment on Ethernet switch only partially working 1 month ago:
You have three routers? Why?
Throw 2 of them out and he switches.

- Comment on Solar will get too cheap to connect to the power grid. 2 months ago:
That’s fair, but the reason it’s not economical right now is mostly poorly thought out contracts and subsidies. We are already paying for this mess.

All I’m hearing is excuses not to invest in battery storage at the grid level.

Modern inverters do this somewhat safely by sensing the phase before outputting power.
Of course, you can’t tell just by looking, so I still would steer clear of the whole thing on principle.
