Yeah, the “elusive creators” is a tough nut. If some company went bankrupt 10-20 years ago, and no trace of who holds the IP etc. that’s a lot of detective work.

just because one person you believe to be the keepers of the code says it’s ok. doesn’t mean it’s the correct person or all the persons permission is needed from, and modifying or distributing the code yourself is still quite risky.
