I think it's unnecessary - renewables already grow as fast as it's reasonably feasible
It’s always former “leaders” that are calling for good policies. When they are in power they are happy to fuck everyone over.
It’s easier to say stuff because taking these sort of action is most of the time politically suicide, the opposition will drum it up as a bad move that hurt everyone. It take someone with very strong political will and leadership to put these sort of policies ahead.
I guess political suicide is worse than people dying because of climate inaction

It’s a fossil fuel tax. It was pitched by a leader in power. “Always”? I think not.
Plot twist: the demented flatlanders were weaponized by their USA oil-barons via our conservative party, and it’s probably gonna be a memory after next election.
The earth won’t be fixed before I die. For some people that means they don’t support anything to blunt or (please god) revert the damage because they’re selfish. These are the people you’re voting against.

One point where global taxation would make a lot of sense would be aviation fuel. It is tax-free due to an international treaty from 1940, and contributes a lot to pollution. Using such a tax for climate action items would be a double win!
