Welp, I was planning to buy a Nexar dual-cam (front and cabin-facing). I didn't know their cameras could transmit data and aren't local only. Time to look for another option.

Fucking. Told. You. So. Over and over again, I talk to people about this shit, but no one really seems to get the existential risk, let along the actual realtime ones. CCTV security does not need to be internet connected.

Don’t install cameras inside your homes, whether it’s facing your yard, inside your garage, and especially not inside your living/sleeping areas. These programs are not secure, your terminals are not secure, the networks which transmit the data are not secure. If you don’t want a play-by-play of your argument with your SO, kids, or other family members, let alone footage of you fucking each other or rubbing one out, don’t fucking install cameras in your home.

Years later: “We’re going to mount similar shit-security wireless camera systems on our personal vehicles to record everything around us on a second-by-second basis. What’s the worst that could happen?”

It does need to be Internet connected. It’s critical for patching remote exploit vulnerabilities…

I use wyzecams cause they’re cheap. I have thought about maybe adding a dvr drive to my nas and adding a docker container for them instead of wyze software. But I also just use them for outdoor use, watching my driveway and doors. Was disappointed that paying for one camera instead of sdcard only mode didn’t retrieve footage when my sdcard failed, so stopped paying. I only show what I view as public though. So not too worried about privacy. I live on a secluded drive, and most visitors are raccoons and opossums (which is why I have one camera on chickens)

Did nobody learn from the time that almost every laptop camera was hacked? My dashcam has an SD card. Why would it need to go to the internet ever?
