The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will not release statistics from the 2023-24 Survey of Income and Housing (SIH) due to data collection issues. Despite work to address these issues, the data did not meet the ABS’ high standards for official statistics and will not be released.

In other words: It shows that average Australians are slipping into poverty into faster than the government will admit, so the report is being suppressed.
It’s unlikely we’ll get the results of this survey ever again.

It would be a pretty big scandal if an ABS report was being suppressed. Has it happened before? I just took their word for it. Am I being naive?

Given the list of data which they provide as an alternative, you’re not likely being naive.

Yes, but also this would be a huge scandal which would no doubt come out.
As much as this is a pretty big fuck up, I have decent trust in the integrity of the vast majority of public servants. (Not to say that information isn’t ever massaged or suppressed in the public service, just that a conspiracy of this magnitude would not stay quiet).
Give it a couple of months. If it really is a conspiracy, I bet we’ll find out.
