LG OLED TV is changing inputs automatically.

Since I bought this LG OLED B9 tv around 2020, when an external device such as a game console was turned on, a little prompt would pop up, and you could press OK to switch, or ignore it to remain. I really appreciated that, and it seemed like a really smart way to handle things. And now as of a few months ago, it’s begun automatically switching, even if the device is simply running an update. I’ve changed the setting to prevent the behavior, but the prompt is still missing.

So, uh, what the fuck?

This could be a total longshot, but if you have a set of devices with HDMI cables and CEC enabled, if a cable fails or a new device comes in that isn’t doing proper termination, it can affect the whole network.

Maybe try unplugging all devices, restarting the TV, then adding them back one by one and see if it still happens.

It can totally be a hardware or firmware issue on the TV side, but at least, this is a cheap and easy test.

  I actually did connect a sound bar around then, and it’s not a major brand, so that sounds plausible.

You’ve disabled the automatic switching based on HDMI CEC, and yet the TV still automatically switches and without a notification/option in advance? This just sounds like a firmware update for the TV introduced a bug.

I’m in the same camp with the other commenter who suggested never attaching a so-called smart TV to the Internet, for then it can never perform an unwanted update. Because for whatever near features an update may bring, it rarely can be reversed if proven to be undesirable. I’m staunchly in the “own your hardware” camp, so automatic-and-non-undoable updates are antithetical to any notion of right-to-repair principles, and will inevitably lead to disposable electronics.

Your best bet might to try attempting a manual software downgrade using a USB stick.

  No, it’s stopped the switching, the option does work. It just doesn’t go back to the prompting, which is annoying. Not like any of this is a big deal, just, why?

    I think what they’re saying is a firmware update changed the TVs programing so it now switches automatically without giving a prompt and a solution might be to disconnect the TV from the internet and try to re-install a previous version with a usb stick.
