David Graeber’s Debt: The First 5000 years in a memeshell (actually no the book is about much more than that).
What do a Mafioso, an ancient Mesopotamian temple and a Roman aristocrat have in common?

I didn’t expect to have my attention held by such a potentially dry subject for nearly the entire book, but it is a truly fascinating read.

Definitely. If you haven’t already, you should also read Bullshit Jobs: A Theory. Pretty enlightening stuff, though not quite as all-encompassing as Debt. If you need a sales pitch, you get to see Graeber say “I would like this book to be an arrow aimed at the heart of our civilization.”
