Finally finished reading THE ROUSE, by China Miéville. 5 out of 5 stars. It's clearly evident why it took the author two decades to write.
It's a story that is so different from anything I have ever read, that I swear it began to rewire my brain, and made me progressively more comfortable about thinking in terms of contradictions with mirrored meanings. The novel is dense with references to political movements, history, literature, espionage, the military-industrial complex, economic theory, the social sciences, and every kind of intrigue you can imagine (and some you definitely had not even considered).
There are sentences so well-crafted that you end up re-reading them just to soak them in, even if the meaning is not immediately clear.
Much of the story feels baffling, for most of the time, but at the same time, it's strangely addictive. It's weird, confusing, highly intelligent, and disorienting.
This is the kind of book where on a re-read, you're likely to pick up on so much that you missed the first time through.
@kimlockhartga @bookstodon I'm about 10% in, and deliberately taking it slowly. Because Miéville.
And it's already so good. I'm sure I'm missing stuff and I don't care, because I'll catch more the next time.
@A_denie @bookstodon perfect approach.
