WAR, a graphic novel created by Eoin Colfer, Andrew Donkin, and Giovanni Rigano, has a focused message, beginning with the quotation:

"Every war is a war against children." ~Eglantyne Jeb

Now, just so you don't worry, this is a fairly tame rendering of war. It does a great job describing the psychological and emotional effects on children, but it tiptoes past other elements. (It actually feels more terrifying by omission.) There are things even worse than death, but the story doesn't go there.

I was quite moved by the story, and emotionally affected, even more than I anticipated. I could not help but think of all the people for whom this is their world, right now. Safe in our homes, we cannot truly imagine what it would be like to be a refugee of war, not really, unless we'd already experienced it. The book does a great job of expressing that, by contrasting the demeanor of those who got out of the war zone, and those who didn't. It was like they were on different planets.
