I’ve been using Duck DNS happily for years but it’s been down more than up for the last month for me and I think it’s time to switch.
Any DDNS recommendations?

Yes, there was a thread just yesterday with a bunch, and I’m sure you can find more with a search

Ah my bad. Doesn’t show up when you search DDNS, I guess it wasn’t mentioned in the post at all.

cloudflare and a simple docker container. There’s a reason why they’re the biggest. Annual cost of the domain and everything else is free.

I use Mythic Beasts as my domain registrar, they have a DDNS API endpoint. Nice design, you can basically just ping it with your public key to update the DDNS entry to your origin IP (or manually set it in the request, if you want to introduce another point of failure).
I have a cron job that runs every 15 minutes that hits that endpoint, literally just a one-liner script. I have never understood why everyone is using entire libraries for such a simple operations.

I couldn’t get my head around DDNS when I started out, so I ended up renting a dirt cheap VPS and running a wireguard tunnel from my homeserver. I think I pay ~$3 a month for the VPS, where I also run the reverse proxy for my services (Caddy).
Cons: I’m not completely self sufficient Pros: My machine is not exposed directly to the net, and it was laughably simple to set up.

As a selfhoster, I host my own dyndns :)

which software do you use for that

I run PowerDNS as my DNS server. This supports rfc2136 (iirc) which can be configured via the dnsupdate tool for example. and then a webpage that allows to register new names. i added two columns to the powerdns databse “dyndns” as a flag if this domain can be used for ddns and “webkey” as an alternative update mechanism via wget. some small php script that does the sign-up and update in the powerdns database.

namecheap is the registrar I use, and ddclient works with them. Been using it for like 10 years.
Another thing I do is log the public IP address of my laptop and my home into syncthing every 5 minutes.

Unless you need to allow public access, you could consider if something like Tailscale would fulfill your requirements too.
B0rax@feddit.org 3 weeks ago
Seriously the amount of times tailscale is mentioned I this community, I start to think it’s just a big ad.
If it is only me who accesses it, I can just use WireGuard with a dyndns, it’s easy enough to setup and does not rely on some company.
If I want others to access it, tailscale is just another hurdle to them.
Obeca@pawb.social 2 weeks ago
It is all wireguard in the end, if you want to set that up manually then go for it. And you can self host headscale if you want to maintain that, but I think just using the free version of tailscale does fulfill a use case where dyndns used to dominate, which is accessing a lab or home network from a few specific devices in your own control. I see a greater risk in keeping a public exposure for remote access than from Tailscale causing an incident for that specific purpose.
If it is meant for public hosting that goes out the window of course. Tailscale has something for that but I have not used it. This is all my honest recommendation, I have no affiliation.

Acronyms, initialisms, abbreviations, contractions, and other phrases which expand to something larger, that I’ve seen in this thread:
Fewer Letters More Letters DNS Domain Name Service/System ISP Internet Service Provider VPS Virtual Private Server (opposed to shared hosting)

Quad9 has a ddns?

FreeDNS works well if you don’t have your own domain. You’re limited to 5 records though.
If you have a domain, many registrars have an API that can be used for dynamic DNS.
cheesemoo@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Yep, they’re who I used after DuckDNS, can recommend. More stable and faster than DuckDNS in my experience! I’ve since moved to Porkbun for my own domain, and their API is well-supported by various dynamic DNS tools.
