To give OP a boon, my friend’s mother had a plaque with a saying along the lines of “I was born against my will and I will die against my will. So please let me at least live like I want to.”
I think that’s a good philosophy to approach your own life and the people you encounter.

I liked the quote until I started to think of the negative parameters of such a saying. It comes down to who is saying it < their intention.

Well, to come back to your post they chose to live like that to a degree. I guess for themselves it was nice.
