  Those with direct sponsorships and/or patreon subscribers or other donators probably make more off those other means of generating income than what Google AdSense pays out

  True. But its only a matter of time before Patreon gets sold off, like Bandcamp was a year ago. The longer time goes on, the fewer of these alternative outlets exist, and the more people depend on a consolidated set of tools to reach their audience.
