Comment on Spread of gang violence wrecks Sweden's peaceful image

It’s interested how the reaction here is different compared to US. They have the highest gun violence in the whole EU, but it’s a few hundred cases not tens of thousands, and it’s considered a national crisis.

At first I thought it might be due to the lower population, so each instance is more felt, but I did the math to see and it surprised me:
So far in 2023:
At least 50 fatalities have occurred in relation to gang wars (shootings, explosions etc.) There are around 10 million people in Sweden.
50/10,000,000 = 0.000005, or rather 1/200,000
In the US, there have been 35,000 fatalities in relation to guns (I’m not well versed in US death statistics, so please correct me if I’m wrong) there are around 340 million people in the US.
35,000/340,000,000 = 0.0001029411764, or rather 7/68000

Just because I was curious and wanted to see an apples to apples comparison: Sweden’s fatal shootings = 1/200,000 America’s fatal shootings = ~205/200,000

Are you two using different numbers or something? 7/68,000 as quoted in the parent comment equates to less than 28/200,000 Or is my brain just breaking and I’ve forgotten how to math?

Apologize for the bad math your right. It’s only like 25x more likely to be shot in the USA not 200.
