Ferengi have never stopped caring about profit, it's a fundamental part of their culture.
Gold pressed latinum is an interesting currency FWIW. IIRC it's so valuable that gold is just the container for it, adding little value.

Gold can be replicated, so it is worthless. I forget why it's used as a container for Latium though.

Looks nice. Non-reactive. Quark talks about gold-pressed latinum having a distinctive clink, so the gold would be a part of that.
