That was specifically stated for the Steam Controller, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they extended it to others.

Comment on Steam Deck sells out in North America within 24 hours of price hike
atrielienz@lemmy.world 4 weeks agoI don’t know if it is scalpers. Didn’t Valve institute a system to prevent scalping requiring older accounts and the accounts having to make a purchase within a certain time frame to be eligible or is that just for the controller and Steam Machine?

Yeah. I tried to look but haven’t been able to find something concrete yet.

AFAIK they made a waiting list based on wish lists for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame after the Steam Controller was sold out immediately and scalpers but them up on Ebay for $300 a piece the same day. I assume they haven’t rolled out that system for the Steam Deck sine it’s already out. It’s probably part of the reason they hiked prices that much. Apart from obvious hardware price increases of course. Scalpers or not, the whole situation just stinks. And I’m saying that as someone who doesn’t want a Steam Deck.

Yeah, but I also have been checking resale sites like eBay and last night (haven’t check this morning) I didn’t see an influx of new postings for insane prices. Most of the listings are pre-owned rather than new in box.
