    I was under the impression that the second photo was him fixing the chip on a transparent plate, so he can place it closer to the camera.

  There appears to be some compositing going on to my eye; I’m not sure what kinda lens will focus equally well on two subjects with that much distance between them.

    No lens can do that. It’s usually done by overlaying several pictures with different foci. I think that’s what’s called HDR
