From 1959 to 1961 as a direct result of policy in “The Great Leap Forward” between 15 Million and 55 Million people died of the great famine which is the largest manmade disaster in human history, leading to the early termination of the the campaign.

You can blabber all you want about the great leap forward, the fact still stands that Mao liberated China and Korea from Japanese occupation, removed the fascists of the Kuomintang, and doubled life expectancy. Mistakes happened, but his mandate was still overwhelmingly positive and material life prospects bloomed as a result. How many people died of starvation in China during Maoism, and how many in India in the corresponding period?

Korea was occupised by Japan during WWII.
China was at war with Japanese colonists until the fall of the Japanese Empire, as the USA reached the main islands and dropped bombs on Japanese Capitals.
