We had this kind of Internet 20-30 years ago. It was nice. But then humanitarians came, then kids came, corporations… But 30 years ago the Internet was a beautiful place where engineers and geeks lived in harmony.
Comment on What do you think is the opposite of Kiwifarms?

Celebrating, or hating, someone for characteristics outside their control is really weird to me.
Sites like the one mentioned aren’t worth giving time or attention, even mentally. My mind short circuits into thinking the same about sites celebrating the same.
I’d be awfully annoyed if someone went around celebrating me for having brain damage, as if I’m some prop to be hoisted around.
Instead I’d prefer we’d focus on building sites and communities where such things don’t matter, and where we can all give each other enough leeway to get along amicably.
I’m aware it’s a pipe dream, and people just aren’t good at that, myself included, but the idea is dear to me.

The peaceful bliss of usenet forums & the nice decorum of mailing lists, lol. The mythical peaceful Internet has never existed.

It existed. It was just a different concept of “peaceful”. It wasn’t peaceful by current “politcorrect” expectations. It was “show the code or go fuck yourself”. It was based on merits and expertise, not by loudness. Modern Internet is a much more aggressive and repulsive place even if people can’t say “fuck” or “lick the outlet” anymore.

if people can’t say “fuck” or “lick the outlet” anymore.
People can say fuck though, I’m not sure where the idea that the Internet is politically correct now just because we outgrew SomethingAwful & 4chan (both sites that still exist).
show the code or go fuck yourself
Except that’s not really true, you can look at the Linux kernel for example multiple out of tree forks existed for years because of personal beefs not coding skills (it doesn’t matter how good your tail-packing filesystem or scheduler is, if you’re an asshole it won’t get merged).

You make an excellent point.
Perhaps, instead of “celebrating”, the opposite of “[vicious] harassment and [ignorant] hatefulness” is virtuous identification and commitment to learning. Thoughts?

I love that sentiment. I feel learning about things I don’t have any familiarity with, be it cultural, historical, physical, or anything else really helps me understand and empathise better.
