    The US could have negotiated and easily gotten that base at any point. The only reason to take this loud and aggressive tact is to make noise and distract.

    They had multiple bases that they all gave up years ago. With the Arctic opening up due to climate change greenland is extremely valueable again so they want their influence back. I think even have one last base in the north.
