I’ll take one for the team. What is up here?
It’s a reference to an episode of a 90s sitcom about nothing.
Specifically the episode of Seinfeld where Elaine finds the perfect birth control for her (which is some kind of sponge 🤨) but then they stop selling them so her new criteria for a sexual partner is to determine whether they’re attractive enough to use one of her limited supply, which she calls being “spongeworthy”.
Which is reasonable from what my mom told me. She agreed those were the best.
She thought I was sponge worthy.

How well did they work if she still became a mom, though?

I can give more of an answer. There is (or was) a birth control method called the sponge, or the today sponge. It is entered into the vagina and pushed up against the cervix, blocking the entrance, and it contains spermicide as well.
In s7e9 of Seinfeld, the sponge is discontinued, causing Elaine to panic (as it is her preferred method of birth control) and search across the city to find more sponges. When she does find and buys a case, she then realizes that even though she has more sponges, she may never be able to get more, and thus starts to debate on whether her current boyfriend is “sponge worthy”
Wait, that was season 7? The sponge was discontinued in 1994. Seinfeld debuted I think in 1990. That means the sponge episode was 3 years after the discontinuement of the sponge!
