I agree with previous comment. Chav is a subculture that partially intersects with most other classes, except probably no overlap with fully inbred level pure-toffs. I'd say well over half of working class would not be classed as chav.
One journalist writing a book doesn’t make something true. Chav is not a slur for the working class.
I’m a working class man from a working class area in the UK, and the vast majority of people here have never been described as chavs and never would.
Someone wrote a book to make money.
That doesn’t affect the actual way the word is used. It’s used more to describe a lifestyle than anything.

I’m not a Brit, but when I hear chav it’s not working class I think of. It’s someone young, skipping school and some unholy mix of gopnik and mumble rapper.
