One of the reasons I like Hidetaka Miyazaki’s games is that From will rewrite the narrative of their world building to fit with the game mechanics and flow of the game that’s built first before they apply what they wrote to it to tell a story in that world. Every mechanic and gimmick of the game, is explained in-world and that is awesome.

The best explanation in Dark Souls for me is the hollowing: players who gave up and left, just their hollow husks staying around without anything filling them, so they are reduced to nothing more than zombies.

That’s another facet of I love: Not only does the lore explain in-game mechanics, a lot of them are also commentary on a range of player types. The ones that give up, the ones that play for reasons other than finishing the story, the ones that whine about stuff, the ones that act like they’re hot shit, etc lol
