Yeah I've had this issue when using Mullvad. Definitely a VPN specific issue.

My VPN is custom and they block me. How can they tell the traffic is being routed via VPN? I should know this, can’t quite remember how that works.

Where are you hosting your custom VPN? I assume some kind of server rented from a data center. Which means your IP address will be from a data center, not a residential or mobile address.

Because up address spaces of known hosting providers and VPN providers is known.
