I think you’re putting a little too much emphasis on the “paper tiger” bit. It’s become a common saying that’s pretty well divorced from how it first became popularly known. Also, you kind of answer your own question:

I know but honestly, if you came from a communist country like China, you wouldn’t think that the comment of “paper tigers” should be ignored.
I still have family in Vietnam, China, and now the ignored conflict over Hong Kong as “reading too much into it”. Did you see what’s happening there? It’s been going on for years and no one cares or knows in the west… but I do and I know, it’s my family over there fighting to protect their passports and pleading to not be apart of the mainland…
So I do not! Think it’s “divorced for how it became”, I know first hand that comments, lead to actions, and lead to WORSE.
