Bullshit anything but the original iPods are obsolete.
There’s custom firmware you can install to play literally anything and hardware mods to replace the hard drives with flash carts. It’s a robust community and most iPods are built like tanks that will last decades.

Honestly the same applies to Zunes. The software Microsoft wrote for them was almost unusable but Zune hardware is surprisingly high quality.

I don’t have one, but it makes sense. It’s before they felt the need to lock everything down because users might make it the thing they want, instead of selling them a partial solution for a year. Modern devices are fucked, because you don’t own them. If you want something out of it that it doesn’t provide by default, you’re shit out of luck until next year when it might.
