Also, isn't 'The Library at Mount Char' one of the most amazing books ever?
Comment on I've got one more (short) horror book to read before Halloween. Have you

Based on your list, a few I'd suggest are:
Nathan Ballingrud, Wounds [Six Stories from the Borders of Hell]
(same book is also available as Monsterland because some of them were TVfied on Hulu)
Paul Tremblay, Head Full of Ghosts
Sarah Monette, A Theory of Hauntings (rather M.R. James like in its sense of brooding dread)

kimlockhartga@beige.party 1 week ago @CliftonR @bookstodon HELLO! yes.
@CliftonR @bookstodon Should I start with The Bone Key, in the Kyle Murchison Booth series?
Got Wounds on my TBR already.
I've sort of convinced myself I may not be a Paul Tremblay girl, but I'm willing to keep an open mind. 😃
@kimlockhartga @bookstodon
I actually haven't read any Paul Tremblay apart from 'Headful of Ghosts' and a short story or two, so I don't know how his other work compares with it.
That book, though - it just yanked the rug out from under me a number of times. It's very much not a conventional kind of horror story, probably one reason it won the Stoker award.
I have 'Cabin at the End of the World' on my TBR, and I'm curious about that one.
@kimlockhartga @bookstodon
All of the Kyle Booth stories are very good, but IMO they're very much written as stand-alones.
I had read the earlier stories but I didn't need them to understand anything in the latest one; I picked that because it's a bit longer, works well as a standalone, and also I just think it's one of the best - it slowly gets creepier and creepier.
@CliftonR @bookstodon oh cool. Thank you. I kinda like the idea of a series that you can read as standalones.
