I have a friend who is a career nurse and has dealt with a lot of elderly people.
She explained that it has to do with testosterone levels affecting the brain.
As young men, their levels are through the roof and it drives them crazy and they sexualize everything and everyone around them all the time. Sexualize to the point where it will make you wonder if they are gay or not because they constantly want to associate and fraternize with other men all the time.
By middle age, they temper their habits and are easier to deal with and their politics are less extreme by still conservative.
After a certain age and on their way to being elderly … they really soften up on many things as the testosterone levels start to decrease a lot.
By the time they are old feeble and very old in age, their levels are very low and they turn into some of the kindest most humble people imaginable. She pointed out several people in my family and hers that were once almost brutish conservative assholes in their 30s and 40s who turned into meek kindly old men in their 70s.
I should know because I’m a man and I know easily it was to fall into the whole masculine culture in my teens, 20s and 30s … I’m middle aged now and I really don’t care about all that any more … and judging from what I’ve seen in my family, I’ll probably be a very quiet old man who will absolutely not care about any politics in my old age.

I’m no scientist or researcher … but the logic tracks with me.
I have many gay/bi/questioning/anything/nothing/something friends and relatives. The majority of all them are very liberal minded in their politics. There are outliers but not many.
The opposite is also true … I have a lot of straight people in my family and they are more easily prone to follow conservative and even far right rhetoric … this one is weird because I’m Indigenous Canadian and you’d think we would all be a left leaning bunch but we are not.

The left leaning ones are not ashamed of their sexual curiosity, and are not afraid that their male friends or family, or even homophobic females, will think they’re weak, or effeminate, or any of that other homophobic bullshit.
The right leaning ones are fearful, ashamed, weak, and need to belong to a tribe, with a strong leader to protect them. And tell them that they’re not “Gay.”
This is basic Sociology 101.

OK, as a 54 year old male, I’ll clear some of this up, from my perspective Some is true, some is not. It sounds like her male relative never matured emotionally, and became more submissive due to fear from becoming old.
Yes, when a male is in his mid-teens, until around the age of 45, we are literally consumed by testosterone driven sex drive. It’s maddening.
But the being so testosterone soaked that you have to fuck something, anything, and then wonder if you’re gay? No. That doesn’t happen.
People are born gay. That said, human sexuality is a spectrum. Very few people are all the way at each end. Most people lean heavily toward one end. Do some mostly straight dudes sometimes find another dude attractive? Sure. But if they’re 85%+ on the straight end of the spectrum, they never act on it, and occasionally jerk off to a gay fantasy. But they’ll never act on it. While high, I’ve had straight friends admit it.
Not all men want to fraternize with all men all the time, Some, myself included, prefer the company of women, and men who aren’t locked into the adolescent dick-measuring mentality. It’s extremely annoying. My father was an overgrown adolescent who had to constantly pretend he was an “Alpha,” a badass. Up until he died in his 70’s. It was sad, and embarrassing. The guys who do this are emotionally immature. The people that Tate takes advantage of.
By middle age, and older age, these people realize they younger guys can beat their asses, easily. They learn discretion out of fear, not enlightenment. They still like to watch younger guys beat the the shit out of each other, then tell stories of how they beat the shit out the pizza guy 30 years ago, for fun, or that gay guy… because he was gay. I know this, because I hear it.
