Count Izas wasn’t going to say anything when he left, but changed his mind because Ruche demanded an apology. The risk here is that both Ruche and Elm are commoners at that point because that’s the promise he gave in the previous episode.
Lords aren’t allowed to give in to commoners because that rule protects all lords, but he compromises and tells her to take care of Elm which keeps his promise to Elm because that’s some good old D&D rules lawyering going on with that promise to leave Elm alone.

You seem to be misunderstanding my problem with the scene. My problem isn’t with him breaking his rule about not letting commoners look down on the nobility (not that words of encouragement would’ve broken that anyways). My problem is with the show wanting me to believe that the guy who disowned the main character, and showed up here just to cause problems for him, somehow cares enough to say anything at all just because a clown asked him to.

I think the idea is that Isaac actually loves his son, but is really awful at showing it because he’s bought into all this nonsense about how a noble should behave. Plus, he has a temper. He flew off the handle and disowned Elymas because he was disappointed and felt his hand was being forced because the head of his house “had” to be a swordsman or related class, and he probably went off to cry in private afterwards—or so the writer(s) would like us to believe.
Anyway, he wasn’t the one who wanted that confrontation—he originally asked the butler to take care of it, remember? Malice was the one who pushed for him to come down hard on Elymas. It isn’t clear whether he went along with that to please her because she’s now his heir and they have to work together, or for some more emotional reason that he would never admit.

The nonsense about how nobles are supposed to behave did happen in various medieval aristocracies and basically the idea is that without strict boundaries elitism disappears and the aristocrats lose their power soon after because elitism is what keeps everything running smoothly even when the aristocrats are dolts.

The story in my opinion is editorializing by giving Elm a specific flashback of his father at a time when their relationship was still good.
I suppose you could argue we were not supposed to take anything away from that flashback.

I think what we were shown was that he was a hothead with a hate boner for weird builds. Was Isaac a bad parent for that? Of course.
Do parents that beat their kids say they also love their estranged children? I guess, probably?
