People don’t think that way.

1. I know I shouldn’t work for evil Inc but I need to pay rent next month.

2. Yeah but that won’t be an issue for many years so I’ll be far past dead and it’s someone else’s issue.

3. If I can set it up so my children control the last source of fresh water in the area they will be powerful and envied. My lineage will continue far into the future.

Yes working cooperatively would be beneficial but most people prioritize themselves.
