I think it’s an alternative way to access the same content, so probably exactly the same number of people you do and do not like

It connects to the same Fediverse. But it has a few filters and features added. And the Piefed instances block the known unpleasant instances by default. And it doesn't pull in all the content unless someone subscribes...

Ah, I didn't know. I've never ran my own Lemmy instance. I just found out after installing Piefed, that content doesn't appear on it's own. I had to go ahead and add some communities manually.
