- Comment on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row 10 hours ago:
I think that the last article said that Apple didn’t officially comment because this new bullshit law forbids them from even acknowledging the request even exists and we only know about it from whistleblowers. Because of that I assume every other major provider has already received the same request (or will do soon) and they also are not allowed to tell us.
I’m no fan of Apple but at least they’ve got the balls to tell the government to fuck off, I wonder how many of the others will just roll over and give them their backdoor.
- Comment on Programmer gets a NES to emulate a PC, and it's as ridiculous as it sounds 18 hours ago:
By hacking the NES emulator inside Animal Crossing – while running on a GameCube emulator – decrazyo managed to run the PC version of Tetris at a mind-numbing 30 seconds per frame
This is insane in so many ways, serious respect

Dedicated hardware to play only one game? Can’t say I’m a fan, that’s the kind of thing I remember costing £10 and being given to me as a small child!
- Comment on [PSA] Lemmy account deletion is a mess 2 days ago:
Probably a technical consideration (like what if they have an edit timestamp which would allow a dedicated person to find all the comments unlinked at the exact same time), a personal consideration (what if you actually want that information purged as thoroughly as possible), and a legal consideration (sounds like it violates the GDPR)
- Comment on [PSA] Lemmy account deletion is a mess 2 days ago:
Data privacy (the “right to be forgotten”) I’d say is the main reason. Say you realise that you’ve built up a little to much linkable information about yourself over the years and don’t want it readily available for whoever might want to make use of it.
- Comment on You can see who upvoted and downvoted a post by viewing it in friendica. 3 days ago:
If you’d only ever interacted with Lemmy and not read up on how ActivityPub works then that’s a reasonable assumption, it’s not like anything (that I’ve noticed!) actually tells you that your votes are public, and they don’t look to be public in the places you’re likely to see!
- Comment on Bad UX is keeping the majority of people away from Lemmy 1 week ago:
I guess so. Every Lemmy app I’ve used also offers similar views.

You’re thinking like a designer for a slick, centralised, profit-and-growth-seeking company (no shade, I’m guessing that thinking literally makes you good at your job). The fediverse is entirely about choice; if different instances want to have a different default look and feel then that’s great and new users can pick one they like the look of, but insisting that everyone should have the one that you think is best isn’t a meaningful or helpful change.
- Comment on Bad UX is keeping the majority of people away from Lemmy 1 week ago:
How old are you, out of interest? Your posts in your similar thread about default viewing experience makes it seem like you want an Instagram-style image browser rather than the link aggregator which Reddit and Lemmy actually are.
- Comment on Defaults are crucial for good UX and getting more users on the Fediverse 1 week ago:
Why do we need to change what current users already like to attract some theoretical new user that might want a dumbed-down view? This is starting to sound like infinite-growth corpo speak!
- Comment on Defaults are crucial for good UX and getting more users on the Fediverse 1 week ago:
I always use an app so I barely interact with the web ui

What makes you think it sucks? That’s just your opinion, do you mainly just look at image posts? Personally I prefer posts being collapsed by default so I can scroll through and find the interesting ones. Arbitrarily setting one thing as the default is just as bad as setting another.

We have a few different frontends available on feddit.uk, you can easily tell a new user that there are different ways of viewing the same content and to pick their favourite
- Comment on The Last of Us totally blew me away 1 week ago:
The Last of Us was one of the most disappointing and dull games I’ve every played. Over-hype definitely didn’t help, but it looked brown and dreary, seemed to mainly involve walking around waiting for press X to do thing to appear on screen, and threw plot at me when I actually wanted to play a game.

Probably custom ROM only
- Comment on Valve ban advertising-based business models on Steam, no forced adverts like in mobile games 1 week ago:
I just deny most mobile games the network permission, though obviously this doesn’t work if you actually need any internet access (and I don’t think all devices give you control over that permission)

As appropriate for a post about fish I’ve taken the bait and looked up just what the fuck is going on. It’s a barreleye or macropinna microstoma and it’s pretty cool.

Lol fair point. A couple of the newer characters I remember being easier too, Aria is impossible though.

Bard is good for learning the mechanics at a slow pace (if I remember correctly, it’s been a while!)
- Comment on Mum wrongly turned away from easyJet family holiday flight over EU passport rules 2 weeks ago:
“Given the sheer scale of easyJet’s operation, it’s hard to believe they haven’t resolved what is ultimately a very simple compliance issue.”
Given the business model of easyJet’s operation it’s easy to believe they encourage their staff to questionably enforce arbitrary rules, even when they can’t directly profit from it

I imagine it’s just based on the camera app you’re using. Mine (GrapheneOS camera, lol) has an option to remove all EXIF data.

Can’t you also just set your phone camera to not save any metadata in the first place?

- Comment on Description of gamers and gaming from 1632. 2 weeks ago:
Wasn’t gaming basically synonymous with gambling
Try searching for jobs in “gaming” or reading the marketing churned out by gambling companies and you’ll see that they’re still trying to claim that they’re synonymous!

Wow, surprised anywhere still offers that. Is it normal for your country or just a particularly good deal for you?
what alternative is there? No one has the same apps
Use any of the alternatives depending on who you need to message. Most of the people I want to message are on Signal and I still have WhatsApp for the rest.
- Comment on It's time to stop using SMS, here's why! 3 weeks ago:
What human being has sent an SMS message in the last decade? Obviously I’m being a bit facetious, but seriously I don’t think I’ve sent a text since mobile internet stopped being pay-per-MB and the only ones I receive are automated.
