@Harald Eilertsen my question regarding shared hosting was to evaluate if this is still a way we can recommand... personally i found a VPS more convenient but there may be a lot of others who more like to host with a shared host... also because a can be less expensive and not that complicated ( if one is used to install thinks like WP and so on... )

we should provide some guidelines for that... so a list with hoster and some hints for installation and daily practice ... automated backups would be part of that.

Most likely a shared hosting provider will have something like cpanel or similar management tools installed. Which will make things like scheduling tasks and stuff easier.

Perhaps making some sort of cpanel-integration would be a good investment.

    @Alfred Bühler Yes, when you know how. WordPress is even easier, but they still benefit from being a "one-click" option in cpanel and other common site admin tools.

    @Alfred Bühler I am running Hubzilla with a Cpanel backend on a shared host. ItÄs helpful, but expensive. A more simple thing allowing for cron jobs, database operations, email & domain operations is definately making things easier for the non SSH-affine...

    Cpanel and Plesk are proprietary system with expensive licenses but the systems are wildly sprat an used... are there any open source systems around for that kind of tasks ?

    @*_jߍyrope I don't know cPanel in detail, but I think you can do many of the usual admin tasks there. So nothing against that.

I’m planning to add a chapter on this to the admin handbook. However, a page recommending suitable hosting providers would then have to go elsewhere.
The topic of backups is something that’s relevant to every type of hosting and could also be given its own chapter.
