Historically when an army is coming to kill your family there wasn’t often an opt out clause for the women and children and elderly. Even if the army didn’t kill you, you were probably going to starve to death after it killed all the men and older boys.

Yeah, they’re pretty useless in combat so they carry things around and play music to make the constant threat of death more upbeat and chipper.
