having an ideological-problem with people making a living off their code
I’m just going to stop you right there. Free Software / Open Source Software are not opposed to people earning money. In fact, they encourage it and there are several avenues through which it is possible, such as not making the code public and selling binaries to people with the source bundled.
You don’t need to fuck over and mistreat users to earn money.

If only he didn’t decide to call it “open source”, when it has quite an egregious license.
- Comment on Nintendo DMCA Notice Wipes Out 8,535 Yuzu Repos, Mig Switch Also Targeted. 1 month ago:
That’s not “proprietary code”, those are keys. And they actually didn’t include keys, Yuzu did require you to supply a key, however a lot of them were then derived from the key supplied.
And there is no other way to do emulation and a whole host of other things if you can’t use their keys. Make no mistake, Nintendo wishes it could make using the keys at all illegal.

They didn’t win, they did an out-of-court settlement.

They did do shady stuff but I hate that the “TOTK worked on the Switch perfectly on release day” is thrown around as an argument. It’s an emulator, emulating the switch hardware, if it does it’s job well of course it’ll do that.
I know that they used leaked builds but that just annoys me.

Source?
Not disbelieving, but I’ve never heard this before.
- Comment on ByteDance prefers TikTok shutdown in US if legal options fail, sources say 2 months ago:
I dislike TikTok but should you really be banning platforms we don’t like?
Sanction them if they misbehave, yes. Prevent most of the population from communicating using it? Absolutely not.
Americans have weird priorities when it comes to freedom.

- Comment on Secure Operating Systems (Microkernels seems to be the future) 2 months ago:
It’s likely because of the extra complexity involved in microkernels. Especially like the Hurd, which really didn’t take off because it was too ambitious and Linux was finished faster.

Ah yes, having the freedom to do as you wish is an “attack vector”.
The app store itself is no stranger to rogue apps.
- Comment on Hey, I'm new to GitHub! 4 months ago:
Seriously. It’s infuriating. Everything so so damn dumbed down now it’s ridiculous! People are incapable of doing so much as reading error messages and doing basic troubleshooting, sometimes I wonder where society went wrong. They’re completely dependent.

But do they ignore existing implementations of a feature when they want to add that feature? And make it crappier when federated?
- Comment on Paying people to work on open source is good actually 4 months ago:
Yes, the users can redistribute however they like. That doesn’t stop you charging an initial fee (and most people would probably rather get software from the official source)
- Comment on Why Charging Your Gadgets Over 80% Is Such a Bad Idea | iFixit News 4 months ago:
Most Android phones do, hell even the experimental phones like PinePhone do. You just have to flip a toggle.
- Comment on Paying people to work on open source is good actually 4 months ago:
You definitely can. “Free” refers to the freedom of the users, not the freedom of people who might want to be users (that doesn’t even really make sense, how can you provide the freedoms to people who don’t even use the program?).

“Foam mouthed Threads opponents”
Threads is quite blatantly just going to throw it’s weight around. It’s not in good faith. They’re already not going to properly implement ActivityPub (which they apparently would do, according to pro-Threads federation people), and so certain content will appear different on Threads and AP.
Smaller services and services which aren’t megacorps are fine. Honestly, BlueSky federation seems like a good thing to me. But we’ll have to see about that.
- Comment on Windows 11 24H2 goes from “unsupported” to “unbootable” on some older PCs 4 months ago:
It’s really unfortunate that some people still rely on Windows for their computing. There are better, more respectful alternatives but Microsoft’s stranglehold causes problems switching.
