- Comment on abandonware empires 1 year ago:
Games publishers are in a war of attention and don’t want to compete with themselves. They won’t sell you an old game if they can get you hooked on the new version with microtransactions and DLC with no story and sub-par multiplayer.
The next point is just making the case for open source.

It’s not a typo, I just lazily wrote the comment like I’d speak.

Not sure why you assume this? I never made the claim

One day it’s gonna come out that it was all a prank organised on 4chan, isn’t it?
- Comment on Just Stop Oil protestors interrupt UK’s biggest games event EGX 1 year ago:
Aaaaaaaaaaand this is how you nuke support from orbit.
This way isn’t working either. It’s time to go back to the drawing board and brainstorm some better ideas.
- Comment on Just Stop Oil protestors interrupt UK’s biggest games event EGX 1 year ago:
I suspect it’s for the publicity. Events like this attract different demographics than the usual targets, so it’s more exposure. It might not make the tabloids but it does get reported on.
Historically, any publicity has been seen as good publicity. But, given the reputation they are building, I think this is not how it is playing out.
So I agree, it just makes people with little to no power feel blamed. Time for a change of approach.
- Comment on Google has sent internet into ‘spiral of decline’, claims DeepMind co-founder 1 year ago:
I know Google is a big corpo but its hardly the only reason behind the state of the internet. It is a major factor, but to single out Google when Microsoft and others have played just as significant of a role is odd.
- Comment on Government debunked 15-minute city conspiracy it now backs 1 year ago:
The word “agenda” triggers a Pavlovian rage response in me.
The sheer number of times I’ve seen some right-wing numpty angrily posting things like “what is your AGENDA?!” in response to political figures has permanently tainted the word for me.

Jo Cox was murdered by a fascist wasn’t she? What kind of warning are you talking about?
- Comment on Russell Brand admits ‘extraordinary and distressing week’ and floats media conspiracy over sex assault allegations 1 year ago:
If I had any doubts about his guilt they were eradicated as soon as he called this a deep state conspiracy. Nobody is conspiring against has-been comedians.
I hope that the police look into these allegations. Chasing his monetisation is not a punishment since he is already wealthy.
- Comment on Russell Brand: Comedian accused of rape and sexual assault of four women 1 year ago:
The problem with that is that the public should never get to be judge, jury, and executioner. Rumour and gossip should not be the basis for something this severe.
Brand has made more than enough money to live his life peacefully out of the public eye. The court of public opinion is only capable of ruining the wrong peoples’ lives, people who don’t have wealth and fame. The rich and powerful can uncancel themselves after a short period of exile, should they wish.
- Comment on Tony Blair says junk food should be made too expensive for the poor to afford through new sugar and salt taxes to tackle obesity 1 year ago:
It’s not a tax on poor people, its a tax on unhealthy food, which you’ll be surprised to find out that everyone eats regardless of economic class.
- Comment on Tony Blair says junk food should be made too expensive for the poor to afford through new sugar and salt taxes to tackle obesity 1 year ago:
I think this would be more effective than a lot of us lefties would like to admit. “Healthy” food is already affordable, people just don’t want to eat it when there are other options.
- Comment on Russell Brand: Comedian accused of rape and sexual assault of four women 1 year ago:
I really do wish allegations of this level of seriousness could go through the legal system before being presented to the court of public opinion. If he’s actually assaulting 16 year olds then he needs sending down!
- Comment on [deleted] 1 year ago:
Neither of the two points you’ve made address what I said. Maybe you misunderstood. By “MySpaced” I mean “become irrelevant”.
Being open source won’t prevent this, sadly. 4 years is still young, but if a critical mass shifts back to Reddit then Lemmy will be considered a failure.
- Comment on [deleted] 1 year ago:
It’s time for Lemmy devs to really think about the pain points and how to address them.
It’s clear that federation isn’t working as intended. Because of that, moderation is too difficult. Defederation has been a major drama for Lemmy, which is only being made more likely given these complaints have not been addressed.
Then there’s the curse of choice that makes gaining non-tech users a lost cause. It is leading to extreme fragmentation which makes people drift back to their busier platforms.
These issues need to be addressed or Lemmy will be MySpaced within a year.
- Comment on Starmer assistant among lobbyists working for shadow cabinet 1 year ago:
It is a worry of mine that we will be giving so much power to Labour at the next election
And it’s a worry of mine that you’re about to hand it straight back to the Conservatives.
- Comment on Statement from Linus Tech Tips about Madison's accusations 1 year ago:
LTT is one of the biggest YouTube channels and commands a lot of influence in the PC gaming community. The parent organisation actually has a lot of channels on youtube and they pump out a ton of videos under a few different names so even if you don’t recognise the LTT name you might have seen some of their other videos just in passing.
Why is it a big deal? Because the accusations are big, given their influence on peoples’ purchasing decisions.
- Comment on Clapham stabbing: Two men injured in homophobic attack 1 year ago:
Things like this will increase in frequency as long as the culture war is seen as a viable strategy by the right wing. We’ve worked hard to make this country more accepting, we can’t let it slip back.
- Comment on Firefox to become first mobile browser to support desktop extensions later this year 1 year ago:
Relative to desktop, it is comparatively few.
Best on mobile, yes. But the few they allow in FFfA stable is a tiny amount considering how many actually can work.
- Comment on Firefox to become first mobile browser to support desktop extensions later this year 1 year ago:
It’s long overdue. I’ve been running Nightly to get around the shockingly limited number of addons available on Firefox for Android. Hopefully Mozzila don’t fumble the bag with this as its a great opportunity to steal users from Chrome.
- Comment on Wilko collapses into administration putting 12,000 jobs at risk 1 year ago:
Devastated. After Wickes collapsed Wilko became my go to for DIY stuff. Garden stuff, pet food and toys, all easy to grab from Wilko and IMO much better quality than it’s rivals in Amazon (fuck Amazon 😡) B&M (meh 😐) or Poundstretcher (why waste your money there?🤮).
I suspect a lot more than just competition is playing into this. Currently high interest rates will be making that £40m loan sting.

- Comment on Home Office secretly backs facial recognition technology to curb shoplifting 1 year ago:
Inb4 this does jack shit to stop shoplifting.
Not because the government have an ulterior motive or because the tech is bad at identifying people, but because the police won’t do anything as they’re too busy being ambush rapists.
- Comment on I feel like Fediverse users are nicer to each other and more generous with upvotes than reddit. 1 year ago:
It depends where you go, surely?
I’ve met a fair number of numpties on Reddit but I’ve never had anyone tell me neckbeards are an oppressed group until I came to Lemmy 😂
Jokes aside, it’s easy to avoid toxic people on here since they usually announce themselves loudly. It’s easy to block users, communities, or even servers if you don’t want to see something.
- Comment on Apple warns iMessage and FaceTime could be withdrawn in UK over law change 1 year ago:
Yes, but Apple and Meta have many more users and much more clout. As much as I don’t like them, these public statements of intent are needed if this is to be defeated.
- Comment on Netflix password crackdown fuels jump in subscribers 1 year ago:
Personally I don’t use Netflix but I think this should serve as a reminder that the internet isn’t a good barometer for real life opinions. You’d have thought Netflix was about to Blockbuster itself if you went off Reddit comments alone.
Anyway, the real question is how bad is their churn rate. If their numbers jumped up but only last a few months before cancelling, then this isn’t really that great. They really want those numbers to stick.
