- Comment on Oil companies may soon have to pay for Vermont’s climate recovery 7 months ago:
I’m really upset that your comment is so spot on.
Trust me ... me too!
Heat pumps are especially ridiculous because their installation costs are insane when in actuality they're mostly the same installation process as Central Air with minimal extra work required, but they cost 10x more just for the installation alone, let alone the units themselves
I'm eyeing a heat pump water heater though, when our current one dies (which hopefully won't be too soon).
- Comment on Oil companies may soon have to pay for Vermont’s climate recovery 7 months ago:
Supreme Court: Well, you see, this country has an entrenched tradition of allowing oil companies to do whatever they want, so this law is unconstitutional. Wait, you know what ... in fact, Vermont needs to hand over a few of their state parks to oil companies even if they don't have oil under them, because fuck ya'll for even thinking you can make an oil company less profitable.

I don't know if you like podcasts, but Know Your Enemy is a take on the right from two leftists who used to be conservatives who approach it from an intellectual POV.
I linked to the political magazine that helps support them since it gives some rundowns of their topics that might give you some of the sources that can be read instead of listening to their podcast, if you'd prefer.

Losing access to personalized YT would suck, but losing decades of emails would suck even more. I share your sentiment that I fear what these companies are going to do next in the pursuit of more money they can burn and/or give to shareholders as they continue to tank their reputations.
- Comment on As a long-time user hearing YouTube wants to play ads when I pause a video 8 months ago:
I, personally, don't see that happening, but I can easily imagine them making it a TOS violation to use adblock and then killing your account if you continue to do so :-/
- Comment on As a long-time user hearing YouTube wants to play ads when I pause a video 8 months ago:
Same with Google's ads in general. For a long time they were whitelisted by default on just about every adblock list out there because they were so unobtrusive it didn't make sense to bother blocking them, especially when you compared them to the other ads that were common at the time. They were also generally relevant ads, so people actually did click on them and use them since it actually related to the thing they were searching for.
They're obviously more profitable now, but you have to wonder by how much and if they'd be a more trusted company today (and what's that worth monetarily) if they hadn't gone down this race to the bottom.
- Comment on Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads 8 months ago:
Ah, my apologies for the assumption, it's been almost a year but I'm still too used to Reddit apparently!
Yes, the default launcher had ads, the SHIELD itself didn't, but I also didn't like any of the 3rd party launchers I used but I don't remember specifically why. Then, the SHIELD stopped booting so I didn't want to buy another one and went with the ATV instead.
As I mentioned, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to someone who knows they'd regret not having the cast functionality, but, if you just want a device that works very well and doesn't ever have so much as a hiccup during navigation, it's been great!
I would still recommend the SHIELD for someone that wants cast or who wouldn't have a problem with (mostly) relevant ads being shown on the device (stock).
- Comment on Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads 8 months ago:
Yeah I used to have a PC and a Harmony remote that would send macros to a custom script and Kodi would do different things or it could switch to Netflix and ... Like, we just want to watch a movie or TV show not have to perform tech support whenever Netflix changed their webpage!
- Comment on Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads 8 months ago:
My SHIELD would just randomly restart itself until eventually it stopped coming back online.
- Comment on Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads 8 months ago:
You specifically said you use a 3rd party launcher. You know why you specifically mentioned that.
- Comment on Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads 8 months ago:
We're a non-iPhone household and went with the AppleTV when my Nvidia SHIELD died.
Ads were getting put on the SHIELD and I definitely didn't want to buy another one because of that and it has been a while since its had a refresh, so went with an AppleTV instead.
The device itself is fantastic, the UI is so smooth and so much nicer. OTOH, I miss being able to cast to the TV more than I expected. It works decently with the Macbooks though (we're a weird household ... like Macs, hate iPhones).
So ... if ya'll have iPhones or don't care about casting, I'd definitely recommend an AppleTV with Plex (the Dropout, Youtube, Disney+ apps are all good too).

Some cities and counties have additional protections, but at the state level, the only one that's not at-will is Montana and the entire population of that state would fit in a single decently sized city. So, I think that's a distinction that wasn't really necessary, but you do you.
- Comment on Advice on first 3D printer 10 months ago:
I'd say support, whether it be official or unofficial.
Try googling any printer you're looking at + any random common error (not sticking to bed, not heating up, slicer options, etc...) and see what kind of results pop up and if they look helpful.
One of my printers is one that has ZERO support from the community and what you can get from the manufacturer is limited and it kind of sucks when I have problems with it.
Enders for all their faults at least have an insane community support (note: in 2024 I would never recommend an Ender 3/5 as a first printer).
My most reliable printer is a Qidi Smart-3 ... vendor support has been great and the Facebook groups for it have been good too. The downsides: z-offset is manual & it's 185x185 which is pretty tiny and it's a bit of a pain to change the filament.
Upsides: core xy, fast, reliable, klipper
From what I've seen though, quality control is hit or miss, but the manufacturer seems to take care of you, so YMMV, mine hasn't had problems that weren't self induced. - Comment on Minister quit ‘because he could not afford rising mortgage costs’ on £120,000 salary 10 months ago:

I've got a Qidi Smart3 and it's made me enjoy 3D printing again!
I've got 3 other printers and they're such a chore, but the Qidi is just a little powerhouse that works fantastically. Qidi needs to come out with competition for the Bambu AMS and they'd have more of my money in a heartbeat.

Firing the people that do the work to make the company money is just good business! They're a dime a dozen, just hire another 2 managers and a couple marketing execs and soon you'll be printing money! /s [these companies are freaking dumb]
It's crazy what you can get away with when you have some money and no sense!

For the people that don't want to read the article, this seems especially relevant:
But much has changed since 2022: Embracer, which owns Gearbox, bet the house on a $2 billion deal with a Saudi investment group that fell through in 2023. Ever since, its many, many properties have been hit by layoffs on a near-monthly basis. - Comment on Any good Black Friday sales? 1 year ago:
Not sure if you know about Slickdeals, but there are a few, including that Bambu listed:

There are a few more of you do a search for '3D Printers'.
I picked up some filament ... not the greatest deal out there, but it was decent enough for me.
- Comment on Uncommon Syncthing usecases 1 year ago:
I've got a couple of Raspberry Pi Zero's that emulate a mass storage device (basically it acts like a USB drive) that I have connected to 3D printers and my wife's embroidery machine.
Instead of using it with a network share like in the link, I share the folder with SyncThing.
It's super convenient to not have to move a USB drive around and can just leave it connected and get the files on there seamlessly.

Even in at will states (which, let's be honest here, plenty of cities have more people than the population of the only non-at-will state - Montana, so it's not really even worth the distinction) there is a pretty huge difference between being fired for having red shoelaces and being fired for physically adding a device to circumvent building security or removing a security implementation from your work PC.

My top 3 are:
Foss Podd - Has interviews with open source devs from some pretty large projects
Self Hosted - If you're interested in self hosting, you've probably come across some of their resources, why not listen to them?
Unnamed Reverse Engineering Podcast - Interviews with hardware hackers and talking about the tools they use. Very interesting. - Comment on Microsoft is killing WordPad in Windows after 28 years 1 year ago:

- Comment on Should we decide to have a main fediverse community or should we keep posting everything twice? 1 year ago:
Yeah, but, I don't see how that really changes anything.
On a smaller instance (or one that's defederated from others ... in either direction), that might very well completely shift focuses.
For the Fediverse specific community, if you want one with the most chance of getting to the developers, use the instance that they're on, otherwise, I'd think to just let the cultures develop and diverge naturally as they're likely to.
- Comment on Should we decide to have a main fediverse community or should we keep posting everything twice? 1 year ago:
To be fair, to some of us this is a feature not a bug.
A technology post on a technology/infosec/IT focused instance seems to have a COMPLETELY different focus and conversation than one on the larger instances, for example and I don't want those mixed in with people saying that AI is a Jewish conspiracy to take over the world.
There are smaller dedicated art focused instances popping up too. I'd expect that they're going to have a better set of conversations around those subjects than the same threads on a general instance and I don't want those mixed up.
If it's a subject I really want to see a lot of discussion about, I'll look at multiple threads... can this mean that some subjects won't have as good of a conversation because people aren't bouncing off of each other? Yeah, absolutely and that frankly SUCKS, but, as stated, it also means that some of the niche conversations have a chance to grow where they may have previously just been unseen due to how many people are talking.

I dunno why the movie going public was disappointed.
This movie delivered exactly what it promised. If you watched this movie after seeing a trailer for it and somehow found yourself disappointed, I don't really know what to tell you. I feel like it fucking delivered on everything it promised.
Personally, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Not everything needs to be a masterpiece, occasionally something can just be stupid fun.
