- Comment on Microsoft just paused Windows 11 24H2 update for many PCs due to crashes and freezes 2 weeks ago:
A couple of years ago they pushed out an update for the enterprise version of Windows Defender that deleted every single program shortcut from the start menu and desktop on every single device. There’s no way that was tested at all

You wouldn’t notice because you’d be dead. Your clone wouldn’t notice because it would think it was you. Your friends and family wouldn’t notice because they’d think your clone was you.

How is the PC performance now? I heard it was pretty unplayable for a while so never got round to picking it up

I have similar requirements to you and honestly the best solution I could find was Microsoft Authenticator. I know Microsoft bad etc, but if you already have a Microsoft account anyway you can back up all your 2fa codes to your iCloud or Google account

- Comment on Windows 10 reaches 70% market share as Windows 11 keeps declining 6 months ago:
I’ve got Windows 11 on my work laptop and the only 2 benefits I’ve seen are notepad now has tabs and auto save, and snipping tool can now record videos. On the downsides the new start menu is so shit I only ever use it for search now, which is also shit (it frequently misses the first few letters when I press the windows key and start typing), and the new right click menu is annoying.

- Comment on ‘It went nuts’: Thousands join UK parents calling for smartphone-free childhood 8 months ago:
They don’t want the right to privacy and freedom for adults either though. Sure they might say they do if you ask them but as soon as they’re mildly inconvenienced by a protest or someone mentions children are in danger they’re all in favour of spying and censorship laws

I literally can’t think of a worse use for that money. Even $1.2 million worth of literal shit could be used to fertilise plants or something

- Comment on how much backing up would you do of a media server? 11 months ago:
I wouldn’t really class that as a backup, that’s like saying you have a spare tyre because you can always buy one from a garage!

- Comment on Nvidia Shield is getting Auro 3D audio support, full-screen ads 11 months ago:
I’ll have to give that a try! Is there noticeable input delay? With game stream it was fine even over WiFi
- Comment on Nvidia Shield is getting Auro 3D audio support, full-screen ads 11 months ago:
I’m sure I’ve made worse purchases but tbh I’m struggling to think of any truly bad purchases I’ve made at the moment, even this I don’t consider bad as it still does pretty much everything I want. I just don’t appreciate paying to be treated like shit by a company. And the main reasons I chose the shield over cheaper devices was the lack of ads and game stream, both of which have been taken away (yes the ads can be bypassed with a bit of tweaking but I shouldn’t have to)
- Comment on Nvidia Shield is getting Auro 3D audio support, full-screen ads 11 months ago:
This is probably one of the purchases I regret the most. First they updated it and put shitty banner ads in the launcher so I had to install a custom one to get round that. Then they disabled game stream which I’ll admit I only used a few times, but it was still one of the reasons I went with the shield over another device. And now this…
I think when I replace it I’ll just get a mini PC instead
