@paulasimoes @imaginaryuncle @bookstodon I'm going to steal some of those ideas, I think, when I finally get around to setting up my journal, probably next weekend.
But I'm also a bit wary of doing too much in my initial enthusiasm, so keeping it simple or relatively so is something I'll try to keep in the back of my mind.

@imaginaryuncle @bookstodon I got the Canon Zoemini 2 ('Ivy' in the US, I believe), but I've only had it a couple of days so far. Seems good enough for me, but I've seen some reviews that think the one from HP might be a bit better.

@imaginaryuncle @bookstodon yeah, I liked that idea too. I think most just draw trackers and circles and fill them in, more or less prettily, but I'm sure some print them out.

I got one of those mini printers that uses zink paper, I'll use that for book covers to add a bit of colour to the page as well as be a quick visual reminder of the book when I flip through. I may even use it for my index cards.
Speaking of, since I haven't got my journal yet I should work on my card catalogue today.

@imaginaryuncle @bookstodon And it'll be nice to flip through old pages to jog my memory of what I've read and thought.
I'll add a few trackers too so I have an excuse to play with coloured pens, but nothing too fancy. I've seen people add end of month stats from The StoryGraph, and I might do that. I'm sure the whole thing will evolve over time, assuming I don't give up. It should be something fun, not feel like a chore.

@imaginaryuncle @bookstodon mine will not be pretty, with my handwriting it will barely be readable, but I hope I don't give up. As always, I guess it's all about setting expectations. Go low, end up slightly higher?
I use The StoryGraph, which I do like, but I'd also like somewhere to jot down any thoughts I might have that wouldn't interest anyone else (except an AI I suppose).

I have zero artistic skills, my handwriting is atrocious and I'm lazy, so I'm sure this will go well. But I'll try for something simple, just a few trackers, a little colour, some basic info on each book and there is a small chance I'll keep it up for more than a couple of months. Theoretically.

I've decided to keep using StoryGraph, because I really do enjoy using it (I should probably get back to supporting them), but I'll also start keeping a reading journal in a notebook. I tried doing this a few years back, but never managed to make it a habit. I'll give it another go, and I've watched a few YouTubers for tips, and apart from feeling overwhelmed by all the artistry I did get a few good ideas.

As I wrote earlier today, I'm leaning towards a physical journal and a card catalogue rn. I'd still be using Calibre, and probably StoryGraph, not least for the fun statistics.

But the idea of a pen and paper journal appeals to me, everything doesn't have to involve a computer.

@fuzzyleapfrog @bookstodon I don't generally ignore cool suggestions, even if I don't end up using them. :-)

I keep going back and forth on this, probably overthinking things quite a bit;
do I keep using StoryGraph (which I like), go completely analogue with a physical journal, self-host something, do I really care that much about the privacy issues etc etc.

I'm starting to think my whole self hosting idea may be the wrong way to go, and I've been down this road before.
I made a post some months ago about simply using old style index cards for a catalogue and combining this with a simple book journal.
I know I'd be terrible at keeping up with the journal though, but it is probably the way I'd prefer to do this.

@wil @bookstodon I'm not really a very techie person either, but I do dabble a bit.
It sounds like you have a great system, one that obviously works for your needs.

I've been using Calibre to keep track of my ebooks and "manage" DRM as well as to copy the books to my ereader, and StoryGraph to track my reading. I don't use the social features much.

@wil @bookstodon Do you use it to track your physical books as well?

I may actually go this route. I already use calibre on my PC and Calibre-web on a raspberry pi. I haven't used the latter much, except to download books to my Kobo, but if I could easily mark books as read on it that would be really nice.
Guess I'll have to actually learn how to use both Calibre and Calibre-web properly.

@aaron @quaff @bookstodon I don't like to be negative either. I've popped in to my account now and then to check on it, but I guess it's just not for me.

And to be fair, I'm not looking for a social app, just something to track my reading for myself.

@aaron @quaff @bookstodon Personally I don't really mind doing manual updates, but then I don't do incremental ones. I do use koshelf with KoReader though, but that's obviously only for ebooks and mostly just for fun.

@quaff @bookstodon I have an account on bookrastination.com, and really want to like it, but find it much too awkward to use.
