You can find details here, but I highly recommend reading Dinosaurs: New Visions of a Lost World by Michael J. Benton, who was one of the ones doing the research. The book is very fun to read (he’s got that typical dry british humour) and it has absolutely lovely illustrations, including the one I linked above. When I first joined Lemmy I made accounts on lemmy.world, sh.itjust.works and lemm.ee, since I didn’t have a solid idea of what instance to pick and wanted to have options. I was using the .world account when posting from a PC (because I liked Alexandrite) and sh.itjust.works on mobile. lemm.ee was a backup, though that whole instance ended up dying…
As soon as Boost started supporting piefed, I jumped ship and chose quokk.au simply because it’s the best name. Same reason I was on sh.itjust.works, really. My original two lemmy accounts are still around, but I don’t use them at all nowadays. They could come in handy if I ever need to make a lame joke about clones or bots or sockpuppets though.

There’s also the suspicious fact that alien photos/videos bacome less frequent now that everyone carries a camera everywhere. You know what kind of footage is now a LOT more frequent? Meteors. Last year there’s been the first meteor impact captured on video with sound.

Here’s the thing. You said a “peacocks are endangered.” Is Green peafowl in the same genus? Yes. No one’s arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies peacocks, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls Green peafowl peacocks. If you want to be “specific” like you said, then you shouldn’t either. They’re not the same thing. If you’re saying “peacocks” you’re referring to the taxonomic grouping of Pavonini, which includes things from indian peafowl to mbulus to green peafowl. So your reasoning for calling a peacocks endangered is because random people “call the ornamental animals peacocks?” Let’s get mandarin ducks in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It’s not one or the other, that’s not how taxonomy works. They’re both. A green peafowl is a green peafowl and a member of the pavo genus. But that’s not what you said. You said peacocks are endangered, which is not true unless you’re okay with calling all members of the pavonini tribe endangered, which means you’d call indian peacocks, congo peafowl, and other peacocks endangered, too. Which you said you don’t. It’s okay to just admit you’re wrong, you know?
