70%? The fuck? What do you do for a living/do you have an accountant? That doesn’t make any damn sense. Like truly I do not understand how this is possible
- Comment on [deleted] 2 months ago:
They could but if you work as a salaried employee somewhere it is unlikely you would spend enough individually to exceed standard deduction in a year, so they probably don’t write it off.

I wouldn’t be so shitty as to grossly mischaracterize you as advocating for state surveillance, don’t worry. My point is you make it sound like a much simpler issue than it is and we should not be shifting the onus onto the general public in a situation like this.
- Comment on Texas State Police Gear Up for Massive Expansion of Surveillance Tech 2 months ago:
Have you been in a riot or a protest that escalated enough to provoke swift/decisive police response?
I’m not challenging your activism bona fides here to be clear. But i am trying to say is that it is very difficult to work through a mental checklist when shit starts to get rowdy and one should never bank on making a series of proactive decisions while under duress/in a time crunch/in really any stressful scenario.

We aren’t just catching on. You’re letting your smug cloud your judgment here.
This is a new policy that codifies these practices. That is a ratcheting up of the problem.

When you’re talking about massive groups of people you need to accept that a lot of them won’t.

Everyone brings their phones to protests because they have cameras. Riots are also rarely planned in the US so so I doubt even a majority of the participants will remember not to bring a phone with them.
I understand you’re being somewhat tongue and cheek, but the flippancy of your statement downplay the chilling effect of us can have on protests and other gatherings. It also impacts one of the most powerful tools we have for accountability: the cameras on our phones.
Notice that Louisiana just banned filming police officers within I believe 25ft. These governors/legislators aren’t stupid. This is all a very deliberate, coordinated effort.

Then block them. You think this is suddenly going to be a daily occurrence or something?

What tools are we giving them?
- Comment on Lemmy devs are considering making all votes public - have your say 2 months ago:
Already do this based on people’s comments.

What barrier? There is no barrier. You see the number and you make a snap judgment. If someone wants to obsessively check my vote count they’re free to waste their time. If they stalk me I block them. I don’t see what this is solving .

How is that any different than what we see currently? We have no clue why people vote on our posts and comments one way or another
- Comment on Lemmy devs are considering making all votes public - have your say 2 months ago:
Microblogs and threaded forums are completely different platforms with completely different issues
- Comment on Lemmy devs are considering making all votes public - have your say 2 months ago:
Let me ask you this: do you think even a slight majority of people use upvotes and downvotes to delineate between high quality/poor comments and posts? Because I think we all know that the majority of people just use them as agree/disagree buttons to try to build momentum during arguments.

It is baffling to me how many people want to copy Reddit voting system, including hiding voting history, despite having left Reddit. The entire voting system over there is a huge part of the toxicity problem.
Downvoted be removed, all votes public. Accountability changes peoples’ behavior and I can tell you that before kbin.social went down you could definitely see the difference.
This is clearly an unpopular opinion and I will be downvoted like crazy for it, but it is so exhausting watching forum after forum make the exact same mistakes.

Yup! Before they swing across the gap in ANH and after Han saves Luke at the beginning of Empire. Leia sees Luke and kisses him (passionately) in front of Han
- Comment on 23 and me 2 months ago:
Lately I have surprisingly learned that a lot of people mention the kiss ANH but forget they made out passionately in ESB

They should’ve cut all the nonsense outside of the city at the top of Act 3. 90% of it felt like Act 1 appropriate content.
