It would mean a lot to me if open source projects used op n source coms for discussions. I tried discord recently and couldnt even get prast email verification. I went into a server, asked questions and couldn’t check to see if they were answered. Sorry people I ghosted!
- Comment on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month 2 weeks ago:
I have good hardware but I dislike discord for the same reason. I don’t use it every day, and it takes forever to decide to open it because it always has 10 thousand updates. It’s bloated.
- Comment on In the future, it will be considered unbelievable that repairing a product used to be more expensive than buying a new one 2 weeks ago:
Funny you use a computer mouse as an example. I have repaired my computer mouse recently, and they make switches and some of the hardware pieces and sometimes button kits that you can swap out heavily worn stuff. It’s worth it to me, often if others would say it’s not worth the money. It feels good to fix something. My mouse was probably only $70 when I bought it over a decade ago, but they really don’t make them the same any more. My buttons show hardly any wear because of the material they’re made of, and the plastic is still in good condition. And now they’re like over $200 which makes me want to barf especially considering it feels like a downgrade to me.
Anyway, my point is that if you open something up, you often find it is made of parts you can replace. That’s not to say that it’s easy, and it would be great if it was easier. E waste is a huge problem for sure.

Lol, fair enough. None of it is mental if I’m not required to use it myself.

You can set up your own windows snap patterns and you can share windows instead of full screens.
- Comment on Real and True 4 weeks ago:
The only thing mental is putting up with all of these seams. If you’re not in a tactical environment that requires this – say for being able to set up and move on the fly – then just get a big ass monitor. They’re life changing.
- Comment on Microsoft gave FBI a set of BitLocker encryption keys to unlock suspects' laptops: Reports | TechCrunch 4 weeks ago:
Yep, this tracks. I wish the article was clearer about it, because to me it seems like they were indicating there was some permission involved in the choice. Which is not really the case in any meaningful sense.
- Comment on Microsoft gave FBI a set of BitLocker encryption keys to unlock suspects' laptops: Reports | TechCrunch 4 weeks ago:
So how did Microsoft have the keys in the first place? The article says they are automatically uploaded to the cloud. What does that mean? They’re uploaded to the user’s on drive or something else? Because whatever that user account is shouldn’t be accessible by Microsoft, even if they run the service. I’m not saying aim surprised they do have it, but would be nice to be a little clearer about what features of Bitlocker to avoid. Is it the Microsoft account associated with the windows key? Probably.

- Comment on YSK a US passport card costs $30 and is definitive proof of citizenship. It fits in your wallet like a credit card. 5 weeks ago:
Many others have pointed out multiple probably even more important issues with this. I’d just like to add that it’s actually $30 to the state department and another $30 to the processing department (like the post office if you take it there) and another processing fee for the photograph.
Mine was closer to $100 and cannot be used for international air travel.
So unless you’re planning a cruise or a land crossing, this is a $100 fee to try to avoid getting arrested.

If your recipes are formatted like markdown, then there are offline notes apps like Obsidian. The new issue becomes keeping your files backed up in case of whatever, and that’s when the self hosted server comes into play. This is a really good usecase for synching which can keep your small recipes files duplicated on your phone and your computer without ever leaving your network.

I tried to set up some services last year and had some trouble getting immich to work through networking. The answer was tailscale. This past Christmas holidays I got nextcloud and immich up. I use nextcloud for my audiobooks and large files I want to keep but not on my phone. Immich for pictures and synching for small files I want synced often like my epub book arks and highlights and Obsidian notes vault.

Ok, but-- even once you transition to a new service the old addresses are embedded in all kinds of places, user forums, documentation, git commits, etc. Just setting up and using a different service doesn’t make that go away.
