The Matsuri-Eri conclusion was expected. The musical was not. Made me think about that episode of Sayonara Zetsubou where they did one as well.
It’s hard to rank shows. I rate shows just by vibes and nothing objective. Thus comparing anime that I have seen with a long time apart is hard because I can’t really compare the feeling. Is this as good as Nichijou? The art and animation is. CITY certainly didn’t make the impact Nichijou made on me. But back when I watched Nichijou I was a different man. One that was in the awakening of his appreciation for slice of life. CITY certainly is an welcome addition in this decade of SOL.
I do not have much criticism, but I do have a little. The sad/emotional parts didn’t quite hit for me. It wasn’t bad but it didn’t hit super hard. Before watching CITY the animation I watched ARIA the animation. That might have something to do with.

I really liked that part.
Come to !nichijou@lemmy.world for some after care (both Nichijou and CITY).

Recently there was also some critique on Bleach on here. I used to watch things like Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail, etc when I was young. I do really think you need to be quite young and naive and excited by dumb action in order to enjoy this type of anime (as I was back when I watched those). They are also very long, so for an adult with not that much time you would be much better off watching a bunch of shorter anime than to commit to such big one. And in my experience all those types of long running shounen have bad writing, massive plot holes, terrible romance, dragging out the plot, power creep, etc. Those shows are definitely overrated in my opinion.
- Comment on What are the visually-best anime you're seen? 2 weeks ago:
Nichijou, City, Lucky Star, Hidamari Sketch, Zetsubou sensei.
Nichijou and City have this very special thing where the foreground (mostly characters) and the background have this seamless harmony. Usually the characters are in a completely different art style and colour palette than the background.
Lucky Star’s backgrounds are in that delicious water colour style. Hidamari and Zetsubou each have an iconic flat style that just has so much soul to it.
All my picks have an unrealistic style and most of them are very chibi. Much more can be said about their style but I’ll keep it short, you’ll just have to watch them :)

I really like this episode. Wako is always a treasure. Had a feeling the jokes of the shougi match went over my head. Of course the Mambo no. 5 section was funny. Mio drew really gay stuff again (one of the dudes from her manga is voiced by the seiyuu of Takasugi from Gintama?).
But my favorite part is the tennenkinenbutsu part. Which really made me think of Pani Poni Dash! when they also called the great salamander “tennenkinenbutsu”. I also thought they were drawn in very funny and charming way. Gakusha is my favorite one, the salamander was also one of my favorites in pani poni.

I don’t know specifically about animation humor but some general language based things will not easily translate from English to Japanese.
- As far as I can tell, Japanese people swear a lot less and their assortment of swearing is quite limited compared to English. I think creative swearing, which is quite common in media, is very hard to translate to Japanese.
- Japanese poetry is very different and it doesn’t really rhyme in the way we are used to. Translating something that rhymes into Japanese is probably a challenge.
I’m not fluent at all so don’t take my word for it.

Ah they did my guilty pleasure: temporary tomboy feminization. When the tomboy gets dressed in girly things for a moment. It was really funny when Oni came to get his soba. I also like the parts with the old men they have a real good vibe together.
- Comment on [Episode] CITY THE ANIMATION - Episode 10 discussion 4 weeks ago:
When he sings those songs it is quite language heavy and might not translate well to people who are not fluent in Japanese. Same thing with western fans calling Nichijou surreal at places where there is actually a joke but it is language based so it seems absurd.

I don’t think it was explicit yet but Wako called Riko “imouto”. They have different hair colours so that’s kinda rare but makes sense that best girls are sisters. Also Riko can do hacking crashes the crazy vehicle. This is why you don’t add internet capabilities to shit that doesn’t need it (like a scooter or a fridge).
- Comment on [Episode] CITY THE ANIMATION - Episode 8 discussion 5 weeks ago:
Many like Riko. Understandable. Tanabe has one-eyed daruma like Nano. And the text on the police officer’s hat is definitely a reference the the dudes in green jackets from Nichijou, right?
- Comment on [Discussion] What anime triggered a new interest in you? 1 month ago:
A long time ago I watched shounen only, I didn’t know any better. I randomly started watching Gintama and I realised that I liked the non-action parts a lot. It made me interested in things that weren’t mostly action and was the first step of me getting into slice of life anime. And SOL made me more interested in daily life and existing. That sounds ridiculous but hey.
- Comment on When was the first time you cried over an anime? 2 months ago:
Probably Gintama, I don’t know exactly at what point. I definitely remember watching Gintoki vs Takasugi and having to rewind because I couldn’t see shit through my tears.

I can’t help but see some Nichijou similarities, this time regarding whole scenes:
- Tatewaku thinks he is speaking with this future self, some kind of magic/supernatural event. He tries to figure out if it is real or not (badly). This is similar to when Nakanojou tried to figure out the fortune teller.
- The scene of Tsurubishi going to the restaurant is similar to the Yukko in the coffee shop scene. They visit a shop but are taken aback by the ordering process. Now that I think of it this also includes the scene at the bakery. On a separate note I really liked the menu with the hentaigana/cursive kana calligraphy. I don’t know how accurate it really is but the general shape and flow of it looks good. Certainly one of the most beautiful calligraphy styles and not seen often in anime (the big brush type of style is seen more often).
- The chase scene is obviously similar to the Nichijou chase scene.

Watching CITY the animation and finished ARIA the origination. Aria started out average (relative to the rest of it) but then it really started hitting. Ep 9 is one of the most emotional episodes I have ever seen in my life. It did a most wonderful thing: make me tear up without making me sad. And when Alicia explained her way of thinking and acting, it just was so wonderful and wholesome. She is a sage like character. Many anime focus on the dark side of life. Others on big dreams and unreasonable success. Others on comedy and entertainment. Aria focuses on happiness and how to live life. More so than most other slice of life series.

- Comment on CITY THE ANIMATION - Episode 2 discussion 2 months ago:
- With photography as a subject (pun intended) the shot composition goes pretty hard as well.
- The opening has a little moment at the end where they hug that white thing. A similar moment can be found in one of the K-ON! openings (also Kyou-ani).
- This episode is also longer than 24 minutes. I thought that was just for the first episode. If it consistently runs for about 27 minutes, that would be pretty rare.
- It seems that this anime is going to be more continuous with some plot elements than Nichijou. With that I mean that even if there won’t be some kind of grand plot, the episodes do seem to build upon each other in a linear fashion instead of being mostly moments that are separate from eachother.
- Comment on CITY THE ANIMATION - Episode 1 discussion 2 months ago:
- aaaaah the colours the animation aaah
- very Nichijou like humour as expected
- at 7:29 they employ one of my favorites: calligraphy/font annotated speech
- the city overviews are wonderful, always like when anime zooms out
- at 8:30 there is a split screen, I only know of Lucky Star having done that before (also Kyouani)
- artist/editor interaction, reminds me of Gochuumon wa Usagi desuka?
- at 10:31 the “armless form” appears, previously seen in Nichijou and Azumanga Daioh. Seen the greats but not popular broadly in anime?
- the “action scenes” like the wine cork scene are very much like Nichijou (like the Yukko/Mio sausage scene)
- the sections with small interludes betwixed, a la Nichijou. However the sections seem to smoothly connect to each other before going off into their own direction. This adds a lot of world building and making the location feel real and alive.
- It is interesting to see how this fleshing out of the location continues. Another anime that takes place in a relatively small town and in which that location is quite important to whole is Aria, which does that very successfully.
- Wako is a real wacko, god bless her soul
- It’s EP 1 and we already have a broccoli scene. Truly Nichijou 2.0 in spirit.

Excited for City obviously. The Nichijou community is also the City community: !nichijou@lemmy.world.
Finished Binzume Yousei. It’s an old educational anime for children. I don’t think I learned anything new but the fairies were cute and the OP is kinda fire. It has one of my favorite oddly specific events: children learning about the cycle of life. It’s a wholesome anime, recommended for true moe enjoyers.
- Comment on Did anyone here brave enough put "Boku no Pico" on their MAL or Anilist? 3 months ago:
I had heard that name before, and for some reason I had categorised it in my head along with my hero academia and other popular shows I had no interest in. After looking it up because of this post I was rather wrong. Still no interest though.

I don’t know many but I just finished Tamako love story and my heart is full. Definitely too sweet to be real, just how I like it.
- Comment on What anime do you regularly rewatch? 3 months ago:
I don’t really rewatch things because there is still so much more things to watch that I haven’t and there is limited time to watch anime. I have rewatched Non Non Biyori’s first episode a few times. The first minutes are really good and I really like the cherry blossom tree scene including the build up to it.

I finished ARIA the natural. It’s very good again. Especially the OST and Athena’s songs. I don’t think I’ve seen so many golden hour shots in an anime ever. I’m a great enjoyer of golden hour, tender music and a some sappy lines.
- Comment on Slice of life, wistful melancholy, and K-On making me cry a bunch 4 months ago:
I did like BTR, just not as much as others praise it. Nice to hear that you already have Hidamari Sketch on your list, it’s underrated in my opinion. The animation style is also really unique.
- Comment on Slice of life, wistful melancholy, and K-On making me cry a bunch 4 months ago:
For me there really isn’t anything better in anime then moments like the one you describe in K-ON! I have that same picture up as the banner on !kon@lemmy.world. I think older anime do these tender moments better than the newer ones. For example Bocchi the Rock is quite forgettable to me, especially compared to K-ON! (I watched them back to back).
If you are interested in this type of stuff, you might want to check out the genre “iyashikei” (free translation: “healing genre”). The border with iyashikei, slice of life and cgdct is often blurred, I argue that K-ON! is indeed at least partially an iyashikei anime. It’s a bit of spectrum, most SOL will include some iyashikei but some have a much stronger emphasis on it. Other titles that may be of interest are Non Non Biyori, Hidamari Sketch and ARIA.

I’m in the middle of ARIA the natural. My sappy ass getting all weak when the golden hour light pours down and the music starts going. Very tender anime.
