- Comment on Centipedes Don't Fuck 2 months ago:
A disappointingly large proportion of the general population appears to be unable to tell the difference between centipedes and millipedes. Is it possible that the “centipedes” you saw were actually millipedes? If so, they may have been “fucking”, or at least the millipede equivalent of it.
Additionally, it appears that this “fact” is actually wrong (big surprise, huh?). Many species of centipede do have courtship strategies that involve males and females meeting up. The sexes may even employ various forms of physical touch as part of the process. So, it’s certainly possible that the critters you saw where centipedes courting each other.
- Comment on Would you like a receipt? 2 months ago:
For me it’s a little less haphazard, but I’m guessing this person has lived something of a life of privilege and is probably significantly younger than myself.
I had an ex who was arrested because a gas station employee accused him of not paying for gas after he declined the receipt. Grocery stores and department stores, I want a receipt because there’s too much bullshittery and asshattery going on at those types of places for me to go without. I want to see when Walmart charges me $5.99 instead of $3.00 like it said on the shelf and I want the money back on my card when I inevitably have to do a return. Restaurants, I want my receipt because unfortunately some of the folks who run the card will “accidentally” miskey the tip amount, and strangely it’s always in their favor.

- Comment on What were your (now retro, but not at the time) gaming wow moments 2 months ago:
For me it was the original Resident Evil on the Playstation.
It was the first time I saw live-action digitized full-motion video on a gaming system. I know there were a lot of FMV (Full Motion Video) games in that era on other systems, but I didn’t own those other systems and I didn’t know anybody who did. So, it was all new to me once I played a Playstation.
Resident Evil was also the first time a video game had ever given me a jump scare. Early in the game a zombie doberman bursts through a window unexpectedly and I was hooked! I loved introducing my friends to the game, specifically so I could see their reaction when the dog shows up. So much fun.
Honestly seeing and hearing Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo was kind of wow, too. The graphics boost compared to the 8-bit systems I was used to was incredible. And the sound quality compared to the other 16-bit systems I’d played (Genesis and TG-16) was a leap above. The experience probably pales in comparison to modern games, but back then there was wow factor to it.
To young me, Street Fighter 2 Turbo was pretty wow as well. It was “literally” the same as the arcade version to child me. I could not believe the home version was so close to the real thing, because prior generations of game systems like the NES couldn’t come close to that level of performance.

- Comment on Walgreens will close a ‘significant’ number of its 8,600 US locations 4 months ago:
Walgreen’s is the only pharmacy in my town. I never go there much because my insurance forces me to use a mail order pharmacy for my prescriptions and there’s no other reason to stop there.
The main thing I’ve gone to Walgreen’s for in the past few years was for vaccinations and the experience was off putting. They make customers sign up for an appointment online and do/did not accept walk-in vaccinations. But every time I (and everyone I’ve talked to) showed up for the appointment, it’s a 45+ minute wait. It makes no sense.
And I didn’t even learn my lesson. The last time I tried to go in for a covid shot, thinking it would save time, they turned me away once I got there. They asked if I’d been around anybody in the past (I’m thinking 10 days or so) that has tested positive, and I explained that my neighbor tested positive a few days after we’d chatted briefly outdoors and from a distance. That was enough to disqualify me apparently. Oddly enough, I just went to another pharmacy for the shot and they didn’t even ask that question at all.

- Comment on "A pumpkin is not a house plant" they told me... 4 months ago:
This is not to disparage or discourage OP in any way, but when (and really if) people say something like “X is not a houseplant” they absolutely don’t mean you can’t grow such a thing indoors at all regardless of how much equipment and effort you use. That would be stupid, and easy to counter, since indoor greenhouses are a thing as are heaters, humidifiers, air conditioners, fans, and artificial lights.
By the time you’re injecting CO~2~ you’re well past the point of what would be considered typical indoor growing conditions. Let’s be honest. I think we can mostly all agree that if there actually were people who said “you can’t grow X indoors”, those people likely meant under standard household conditions.

- Comment on Amazon Customer Service has become awful 6 months ago:
In a way, I’m glad people are slowing starting to come around and pay attention to this. For years, any time I would publicly complain about Amazon customer service online, it was very common for people to be completely dismissive or even blame me. I’d hear statements like “sure Amazon sucks, but they have great customer service” and I’d think to myself, just wait until it’s your time to find out that the customer service isn’t what you think it is.
Long story short, the item came with a broken part. Should have been quick and easy to rectify (send a replacement part, send a replacement unit, or refund the purchase). The seller was completely unhelpful. Amazon customer service would not intervene and insisted that I continue fruitlessly corresponding with the vendor, even though they had an “A-to-Z” money back guarantee if something goes wrong. It took literally took months of back and forth between me, the vendor, and Amazon customer service before things were finally refunded in full.
So, basically I gave them another chance and they showed that things hadn’t improved a bit.

You’re such an enabler. I love it! Stop enabling me.
I know I’m not necessarily representative of the average gamer, but Hades is and was one of my favorite modern games. I feel like it’s almost pointless to not buy this game as soon as I can, even if I don’t have time to play it right this moment. Have you played it already at this point, and if so, what are your impressions?
- Comment on Hades II is now available in Steam Early Access! 6 months ago:
Solid point. But I want it now. I guess I’m still holding out hope that I might have some time to play while I’m traveling in the next month or so.
Does the early access stuff sometimes stop being available? Like if I don’t buy it soon, is it something that might go away until they’re ready to do a full release?

I’m usually a patient gamer type. I think I got Hades in 2022 or 2023 on discount. I’ve also never purchased an early access game. But I’m seriously considering this one.
Main thing holding me back is that I just don’t get to play games very much this time of year, and I probably won’t have much time again until Fall.

- Comment on [deleted] 6 months ago:
Some of it depends on your circumstances, honestly. What’s applicable and works for me, may not be applicable and work for you in your situation.
One thing that really helps me in my situation is a product called Mosquito Bits. It’s a microbial product that you add to anything that might contain standing, stagnant water. It kills mosquito larvae and is quite effective at it. I place this in the saucers of outdoor plants, in equipment that tends to collect water after rain, and even sprinkle it in plants that tend to collect water (ex: bromeliads).
I’ve also read and heard that using aromatic wood mulch, like cedar, around the outdoor living areas can help somewhat.
The biggest disappointment in terms of products that don’t seem to be terrible effective was a Dynatrap. I had acquaintances raving about it, saw some people on other sites like the R-word saying good things about it, so even though they are expensive and require yearly bulb replacements, I gave it a try. It really did not make a dent in the mosquito population, and worse, it traps so many other kinds of insects including beneficial insects that I consider it to be a failure. I’ve opened up the trap to empty it, and there just aren’t many mosquitos in there, just lots of moths, flies, beetles, etc.
- Comment on Is Lemmy growing or shrinking? 6 months ago:
I can’t speak to growing or shrinking in terms of number of users and I try not to bring “feels like” into this since that’s subjective. However, anecdotally speaking, I’ve been noticing signs of a down turn over the past month or two. Perhaps just a seasonal thing, perhaps due to some other cause such as the upgrade to 0.19.X.
The most telling thing to me is that I’m seeing fewer comments during my active hours. One of the ways I browse for active discussions on Lemmy is to sort by "New Comments’ and switch to the view that shows comments instead of posts. So, I do the sort/filter, view the results, looking to see if there are any interesting comments or topics.
Historically speaking, other than a weird bug that would seem to pin some slightly older posts to the top of the list, everything on the first page would be somewhere between seconds to several minutes old. It was incredibly unusual to see anything over 5 minutes old on the first page and also very unusual to see any of the same comments if I refreshed the page.
More recently though, it’s more common to see comments that are 5+ minutes old on the first page of new comments list. It’s also much more common for me to reach the bottom of the page, hit refresh, and then see some of the same comments in the list after it refreshes. And I don’t exactly speed run through this page – I check out the post titles, if it’s an interesting topic, I’ll often click through and read more in the post, sometimes I’ll even respond to comments directly, then return back to the new comments, etc.
As I mentioned, it could just be a seasonal slowdown. Perhaps the 0.19 upgrade results in a slowdown or backlog of things that show up on the new comments list, I know other things have changed like the fact that I can no longer view anything except the first page of results. Others have suggested there are fewer posts/posters, but that what gets posted “feels like” it’s higher quality, but I’d counter that with the fact that what I “feel like” is that’s not actually the case based on what I’m seeing in the new comments list.
- Comment on Negative electricity prices registered in nearly all European energy markets 6 months ago:
In simple terms with caveats and nuances ignored, at times there can be so much power being produced during times of low demand that the electric companies / systems will lower prices on electricity to incentivize its use. In some cases, the amount of power being generated exceeds demand so much that prices can go negative, and they essentially pay others to use it.
There are many reasons for it, and I’m hardly an expert, but essentially some power sources are unpredictable or unstable (ex: solar power is only generating during the day) and others can’t be shut down quickly/easily in response to demand. So, this is one way to deal with excess electricity production.
- Comment on xkcd #2915: Eclipse Clouds 7 months ago:
My experience wasn’t quite that bad, but still sucked. It took about 4.5 hours to get to my perfect spot. I left within an hour or two after the eclipse was over, and then it something like 8+ hours to get home due to excessive traffic.
It wouldn’t have changed my choice, but I would have appreciated a warning that post-eclipse traffic could/would be extreme because it wasn’t something I had even thought about. Figured it might be a little heavier, but wasn’t expecting that much.
So this time around, I’ve mentioned it to folks who are planning to travel to see it.
- Comment on There is someone who's the first and oldest member of gen Z, and they have absolutely no clue that's the case. 7 months ago:
The definition of these “generations” is arbitrary and subjective. The reality of the matter is no such person exists. So, I completely disagree.
Even if everyone in the world agreed that Gen Z is all people born between 1995 and 2010 (which would require you to be ignorant, naive, or just plain stupid), it ignores the reality of things like geography, culture, time zones, etc. Literally hundreds (if not thousands) of people could have been born at the exact same moment of time, but due to the magic of time zones, some would be Gen Z, others would not. That’s super arbitrary if you ask me.
So, it’s more like theoretically some person is the oldest member of Gen Z, for some given interpretation of what “Gen Z” means. But in practice, there’s no such thing. In some ways it’s like a mathematical limit. There’s no smallest number greater than 0, because you can always devise a smaller fraction. But, if you artificially and arbitrarily limit your resolution (let’s say to 1/10th), only then can you declare some number the smallest (ex: .1).
