Based on our understanding of biology, a prerequisite for sentience is a central nervous system. Plants have really amazing abilities to pass chemical signals, but they lack any mechanics that would allow them to internalize the signals they receive. For example, I wouldn’t say that my doorbell is sentient just because it can warn me when someone is at my door. Importantly, animals are different from plants in their ability to internalize pain, fear, sadness, etc. This is why animal ethics and welfare are considered important discussions, and why it’s damaging to invoke plant sentience to distract from that discussion.

You’re saying “vegans” as if we’re a monolith. I’m sure there are vegans who aren’t aware that plants are considered living, but I’m sure there’s about the same percentage of meat eaters who aren’t either. If every vegan you’ve ever talked to (or most, since you’ve made both claims) has this misconception, I’m willing to bet your sample size is extremely small, or you’re being intentionally dishonest to support your initial claim.

Grass fed: small minority of beef cattle, finished on grain after grazing for about a year. Typically slaughtered at 18-24 months of age.
Grass finished: even smaller minority not fed grains and allowed to graze their entire lives. Typically slaughtered around 18-24 months of age.
Normal: majority raised in feedlots on heavy grain-based diets. Typically slaughtered closer to 16 months of age.All are slaughtered well shy of the 20+ year life expectancy of a cow in a sanctuary.

I really wish all of these companies racing to replace their existing software features and employees with LLMs understood this. So many applications are dependent on a response being 100% accurate for a very specific request as opposed to being 80% accurate for a wide variety of requests. “Based on training data, here’s what a response to your input might look like” is pretty good for conversational language and image generation, but it sucks for anything requiring computation or expertise. Worst of all, it’s so confidently wrong about things I might as well be back on Reddit.

- Comment on Why Charging Your Gadgets Over 80% Is Such a Bad Idea | iFixit News 2 months ago:
iFixit has been pushing phone repairability and right to repair for years. Sure, that makes it easier for them make repairs, but it also helps users repair their own devices. For example, in the article they mention their stance that phones should have removable batteries so that instead of having to take a phone in to get the battery repaired or replaced, you can just swap it yourself. Personally, I want to use my device as long as possible before I’m forced to buy a new one, so I’m happy to have more ways to fix issues myself.

The problem can be solved through progressive tax reform. Check it out: Image
The tax rate on the ultra-wealthy has decreased tremendously since the 70s. By making billionaires pay their fair share and closing tax loopholes, we can make huge improvements to wealth inequality and fund social programs that help people who need it most.

Say you work on a team with, say 50 people. Everyone works hard to generate money, but you’re the star of the show, so naturally you get to keep a little more of that money than everyone else. The question is, how much? Is it morally questionable to make double what everyone else does? What about 10x? What if you keep half for yourself, meaning those 49 other people combined make the same as you? Not enough? What about 100x as much as everyone else? 1000x?
Taylor Swift’s salary is about 1,700x the average in the music industry. People on her team are likely struggling to make ends meet or pay for hospital bills or support a family. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift is hoarding money like a fucking dragon.
