I’d totally pay a repair shop to do it for me (even though we’re on diy here), if I could find one - they’re kinda rare. I actually remember buying some shoelaces at a tiny shoe service booth in a mall - but I doubt they would offer things like dying canvas shoes. I guess what I meant mostly is when such rules are imposed (your house can only look like this and that from the outside), they would mostly come from a public administration like a city (like in my case) or regional government - not a private org like an HOA. Very probably associations like that exist everywhere in some shape or form, but I figure at least in my country they would have much less power because there tend to be just laws for that.

The netting is reinforced with wire, purpose-made for protecting cats and the most robust product I’ve found in this category. In the two years I’ve had it, my cat hasn’t made a single attempt at damaging it, but she wouldn’t stand a chance.

Why though? She does love it, and it’s a very secure build - I spent a lot of time and effort making sure. She has fallen out from a window before, it was terrible and I’m not risking that again.

She has phases of using it daily vs completely ignoring it 🙂 But apparently the most recent addition of the mats made it much more attractive to her (also easier to walk up and down the ladder - the bare wood was a bit too slippery).

My own house sadly is a run-down, never-been-repainted shade of grey, but on the plus side, I mostly don’t have to look at it. Am also pretty happy with the renovations done across the street (the whole building used to be a brothel before, now they have apartments with a shower in each bedroom 🤗 and in the ground floor is a halal restaurant 😂). Some pastel shade of yellow is pretty common here, but I don’t know if the city has rules for it (if anything the pastel seems to be a rule). The tiles on the wall are photo prints of street art - the photographer sold them at an arts & crafts fair.

Tbh I’m kinda proud of how I made the board fit between the upper and the lower window 🙈 although now I can’t open the upper one anymore (but I unhinge it during summer)

We don’t have HOAs in Europe, and why would the city complain?

So I ended up buying a shower curtain like some of you suggested. I might still use the table cloth to add another “bubble of air” to the windows. I’m glad that the YouTube video for that window sealing kit put me up to this idea, because I really hate having things lying around that I bought uselessly and can’t return… Will post pictures as soon as I get round to hanging that curtain, I think it should do the job nicely!

• The board is not supposed to go up while I’m sleeping 😅 it’s mostly for cleaning etc (which is probably why I thought of folding up first). The hinges are a bit of a gimmick, not strictly necessary, but I really wanted the option to fold it in somehow, make it not stick out when needed.
• When folded in, it would be less in the way if folding down instead of up - but that would take away a) the space where any wooden leg/support could go while also b) making the cord solution impossible.
• A leg would indeed be a sturdier support ofc (and would provide a better justification for the fold-away feature). I’m thinking of adding one underneath attached to another hinge. However, I like the string for minimal use of material, and there doesn’t seem to be weight problem with it 🙂

Thanks, that’s interesting! Haven’t seen that method before. I do wanna be able to open the window to let fresh air in, but it could be an option to seal off each wing separately… 🤔

Thanks, could you explain more? You mean I should put tape over the crevices of the windows? Because then I’d have to replace it each time I want to open the window, right? However, there’s also a cold draft that comes from even the most well-sealed windows, because a sheet of glass just doesn’t isolate as well as a wall. I guess that’s what the curtain is supposed to mitigate.

What do you mean by reinforce? Reinforce the casing how? And do you mean that for a hypothetical next time I try to separate a gas spring from some other office chair’s base, or do you mean I should reinforce this one somehow?

Well I knocked the side of it with the hammer, obviously. I was convinced that the outer ring that is recommended to tap was actually part of the base (5-armed structure that holds the bottom of the gas lift) and soldered to the arms - but inspecting it again carefully I relaize that it’s not: the bottom of the gas lift is in fact sticking out through the hole

Image However, after working on that with a hammer as recommended it still won’t budge (I used a piece of wood instead of cloth this time - and it broke multiple times 😂)

I think when buying new ones, you’d only have to make sure they’re built at least for your weight - and then some, to avoid the same thing happening again. Maybe don’t skimp and make sure you get quality. To make sure you can use them, a) see my previous comment and b) get precise measurements!

I just posted a problem with the gas lift in my office chair and happened to see your post. It appears in my case, that gas lift is never coming out of its sockets again, I have tried a number of different ways. It’s so precisely fitted into these openings, it’s not moving the slightest fraction of a mm. So if you decide to replace those gas lifts, before ordering I highly recommend you first try a couple to see if you’re able to remove them at all - it might simply not work, and you could be stuck with these like I am
