I mean, radioactive isotopes are formed in supernovae, so it’s really just solar power from a different sun, right?

Mitch Hedberg jokes while high is a pretty smart move. Either that or you’re the only person who finds them funny and end up looking like an idiot.
- Comment on Cereal 1 month ago:
Almost certainly not. It’s common in some communities for people to write their own image transcriptions.

Spot on!
- Comment on Povertymaxxed and bolognapilled 4 months ago:
Worse still is the pronunciation of “bologna”. How. Just how. None of you seppos have the right to tell me about how I pronounce “herbs” or “pecans”. Then again, our pronunciation of “lieutenant” is messed up.

Sounds good in theory, but there is a relevant XKCD.

Huh, guess I was wrong. Would be nice if they laid that out a bit more explicitly in the article
- Comment on Mozilla Axes its Privacy-Friendly Location Service - OMG! Ubuntu 8 months ago:
This is just a taste of what’s to come from a Mozilla led by Laura Chambers, the new CEO. We should not let her get away with making these decisions as the faceless Mozilla, and we should make sure that the communities impacted by her decisions are made aware of who is responsible for them.

Huh, TIL. That actually makes sense

Order matters in academia whether the authors want it to or not. Other academics will look at the order of the authors and make judgements based on that, so you’d have to specify something like “authors listed alphabetically”.

Out of curiosity, why do you say you’re really pro AI? I feel like I’m stuck in an anti-AI bubble ATM.

Fun fact: you don’t need a DA for these*, so they are a hell of a lot cheaper to install. *Subject to jurisdiction

- Comment on Child psychiatrist jailed after using AI to make pornographic deep-fakes of kids 1 year ago:
Not sure what laws the states or Canada have, but it’s considered child pornography if it’s a depiction of CSA, regardless of whether it’s an adult acting, or cartoons, or AI. I suspect at least some states in the US have similar laws.

It’s reckless, but unless someone with authority is being a pain in the arse about safety, you don’t have a safe work culture that encourages that kind of behaviour. This is yet another example of the holes in the Swiss cheese lining up.

My first question when I read the article was why didn’t they lock out/tag out the machine before getting in it?

I’m not a power user, but I’ve used DDG exclusively for a while now and I often forget that I’m using it. I’d say it’s a pretty seamless transition nowadays.

- Comment on In the U.S., what exactly are we supposed to do when an ambulance, with its sirens on, approaches from behind? 1 year ago:
I’ve had some training in driving an emergency vehicle and I’ve been in the passenger’s seat a few times, so I know that the one thing the ambulance driver wants is predictability. Do whatever you can to safely get out of their way. Usually that means moving over to the side of the road and slowing down, but if it’s really slow traffic you might have to stop. Whatever you do, don’t stop while you’re in their way.
Tldr: stay calm and use your common sense.
