I’ve nothing against the page having more technical farther down the page… I’ve done that with some computing articles that I’m qualified to talk about - simplify the description for the layman, put the technical description underneath…
Math nerds just don’t.

I’m academia? How about Wikipedia, an encyclopedia that should be written (at least at synopsis level) clearly and for the casual reader. However, anything mathematics related and… Fuck you, you don’t know how to calculate an integral? Git gud, scrub.

And that’s because SpaceX at least try to minimise pollution (both light and radio). Not successfully, but it’s minimised.
The Chinese don’t give a fuck, just like they don’t give a fuck who their toxic rockets land on when launched over their own people.

It was a term coined to describe the step-by-step process modern tech platforms go through:
- be good, get customers, grow
- get large enough to corner market, concentrate on profits
- get large enough to move to politicise their approach, drive out competition through aggressive tactics, and lock in consumers
- drive more profit through dark patterns and ensure nobody wins but the stakeholders
It’s specifically that, and there wasn’t a word that described that process previously, as it’s only something that’s possible in a modern, “web scale” worldwide platform.

… but yes, Doom has been used in a computer where the display was E. Coli.

“Actively Commissioning” and “Subsidizing” are two different contexts. Your points are all accurate, but commissioning a movie means actually going out and saying, “we want this movie, and will pay/provide resources to it in order for it to get done”, versus “your doing a movie with military, we’ll provide resources in compensation for a meddlers credit”.

Our councils have been defunded so much that they basically don’t maintain the roads. Our potholes now have “bounce” damage, where trucks have driven into the hole and bounced, further causing rebound holes. Those are now widening.
I’ve driven in Poland in rural areas. There are places in the UK now where Poland had better road surface.
- Comment on Tea Time 5 months ago:
No, that’s fair. Coffee at pressure is about 93 - 95°C… No idea for drip/french press/v60 etc. as I don’t use those For Aeropress, I’d wait until the kettle stopped making noise, that seemed to be a good balance without burning the oils.
- Comment on Tea Time 5 months ago:
Coffee isn’t a tea, as you don’t boil it. If you boil it, you burn the coffee! That’s an extraction - you can steep it, but it’s better if you just push the water through at high pressure (which will royally screw up a tea).
Ah, pedantry in pedantry. So - now for Lemmy to tell me what I’ve gotten wrong :-D

How are you getting on? I’m really considering getting this - I get paid today and have a week next week without the family… Been playing and enjoying Planet Crafters and Forever Skies, and I’m in the survival-building-exploring mood at the moment.

Coding, system monitoring (Work / Home network), Slack / Meet / whatever… generally I’ll have 3 or 4x screens-worth doing work stuff, 1 or 2 for monitoring stuff, one or two for various chat sessions. It’s easier than alt-tabbing all the time.
- Comment on Equally as good 1 year ago:
I have two 4k monitors, and two laptops and a desktop controlled from one mouse and keyboard with seamless traversal across all of them thanks to mouse without borders. Desktop goes to one 4k monitor, split into 4 quarters to give the equivalent of 4 1080p screens, and each laptop is displayed side-by-side on the other monitor (plus their own 1080p screens to give 3x 1080p screens equivalent each… The picture in picture mode on these lg’s is actually usable). It’s an upgrade from the previous 4x 1080p screens to the equivalent of 10x 1080p screens, and I still need more screen space!

- Comment on Most trustable hair shampoo company? 1 year ago:
I don’t really care about trustable, the only shampoo that reliably deals with my dandruff / itchy scalp is Head & Shoulders. It’s a pain in the ass if I don’t use it. I’d rather not, honestly - heard lots of, “You don’t need it, let it handle itself, just rinse it, whatever…” - yeah, I love looking like it’s snowing and scratching all the time.

Just a quick note - it’s this weeks free game, not this month - they do a game or two a week. :) I’ve not played it, and I kind of feel like it could bring the worst of deck-building and real-time strategy together into one, rather than best in my mind; but I’m open to try when I get free time.
- Comment on What is your favorite domain name provider, and why? 1 year ago:
Porkbun have a dyndns plugin on GitHub. Subdomains are supported. They’ve got a full API, so if something isn’t supported, someone can probably implement it relatively easily.

I’ve had the “Tetris Effect” happen to me - at one time I was really, really into Tetris (To the point where I could quite happily play GameBoy Tetris at max speed for… well, I did it for a few hours in one game once, much to the annoyance of my mate who actually owned the GameBoy and had agreed it would be, “Swap on death”), and I had the ‘visualising falling bricks’ ephemera afterwards, and vivd dreams about Tetris for a few days afterwards.
But, then again, if I get into anything pretty seriously, I’ll have dreams about it. I got really, really into building with Lego’s and I had dreams about that; same with Minecraft and No Man’s Sky.
- Comment on How terrible is double NAT? really? 1 year ago:
I’m going to briefly explain why I downvoted… this (I feel) is an unhelpful comment that doesn’t explain anything. You say, “[if] you’re comfortable support a broken-by-design network, do it.”, but you don’t explain why it’s a broken-by-design network.
I’ll say - I agree with you, but the comment doesn’t actually enhance the conversation and comes off as abrasive and unhelpful. If I’m looking for information, I’d rather be given education (Even if it’s just a, “Go here for why you don’t do that!”), not just a, “Don’t do it” with no assistance and help for how to do it right.
- Comment on How terrible is double NAT? really? 1 year ago:
Some routers will call the 1:1 NAT feature, “DMZ” (Short for Demilitarised Zone). The idea is that you just act as a pass-through, in this case, “passing through” the external internal to the internal router.
