Yeah, I'm old enough to have watched Enterprise when it was first aired, and I always went to grab a snack from the kitchen or something while the theme played.
- Comment on YSK that horses evolved in North America, migrated to Eurasia across the Bering land bridge, then went extinct in North America. 1 year ago:
They are descended from horses brought over by Europeans.
- Comment on Gene Roddenberry's first sci-fi show pitch from 1955: "The Transporter" 1 year ago:
It actually sounds a lot like a comic novel from the early 60s called The Big Ball of Wax by Shepherd Meade, who wrote How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. It’s about a corporate middle management drone who stumbles on the development of the technology Roddenberry describes.
It’s all about how the corporation the main character works for figures out what to do about the new technology, because the initial users prefer to have virtual experiences and have stopped buying anything but the basics needed to stay alive and healthy. The corporation is afraid it’s going to go broke and the larger economy is going to collapse.
- Comment on Why are wrong numbers so common in the US? 1 year ago:
My old land line was almost the same number as an entertainment venue whose number spelled TICKETS. People would sometimes dial 1 instead of 4 (corresponding to the letter I), and get me. Usually on weekend mornings, grr, but fortunately it didn’t happen too often.

Same. I find that even that many is a significant distraction.
- Comment on Amazon To Start Running Ads In Prime Video Series & Movies, Will Launch Ad-Free Tier For Extra Fee 1 year ago:
Yeah, I try to buy stuff from brick and mortar stores. I figure that even if it’s a big box store at least there are actual employees who work there who live in my area.
But I can’t even find the kind of underwear I like at any physical store near me. Even online, Amazon seems to be the only place that stocks it.
The same goes for the style of light jacket that I prefer. I’ve spent months looking everywhere, and the only place I found even an approximation of what I want is Amazon.
I’ve noticed that even in big box stores nowadays the selection is pretty limited. You see a wall of racks full of the same item.
- Comment on Amazon restricts authors from self-publishing more than three books a day after AI concerns 1 year ago:
I suppose the idea is that it’s possible that someone has written several books in the past, and wants to sell them on Amazon now.
- Comment on What does cigarette smoking do for people? 1 year ago:
In retrospect it’s amazing how the nicotine addiction causes you to accept hocking up giant wads of brownish-black phlegm every morning as entirely normal.
- Comment on Gen Z is ditching iPhones for $100 'feature phones,' and the numbers don't lie 1 year ago:
I used to have an orange Handspring Visor PIM, which ran the Palm OS, and my friend topped me by buying the phone module for hers. It seemed excitingly futuristic at the time.
- Comment on Church of the Hack Frauds 1 year ago:
Yeah, I haven't seen all the RLM videos, but I've read that there used to be a woman who participated who stopped because she was disturbed by some of the fans' comments about her.
- Comment on Are American tv shows stuck in Act 2 for their entire runtime between season 1 and final season? 1 year ago:
I like the idea that a lot of series are repeating Act II over and over. I had never thought of it that way, but it makes a lot of sense.
